Several years ago, a friend offered me these embroidery Ladies and Baskets that her elderly mother had made.
I loved the embroidery, but wanted a more “modern” look to my quilt.
I added sashings and borders in bright, clear colors.
In order to quilt the blocks..I outlined each embroidered pattern–and left the embroidery clear of quilting.
Spirals and squares…
And a few feathers in the borders…
I really love this lap sized quilt–bridging vintage and modern!
If you don’t have a friend who can share the vintage gems…try scouring your local antique shops–I see squares like these frequently–and sadly, they are always UNDER–PRICED!

Wonderful! I have 48 State flower/bird blocks. I should sash them in woodsy colors and quilt them! Thanks for the inspiration and for completing someone else’s work to be enjoyed for many more years!

Jane Brocket did a wonderful quilt using old embroidered pieces. Quite wonderful, as is yours. Choice of border and shashing colour is excellent!

Ooh I really like how you’ve incorporated the vintage textiles into your lap quilt. You showcase them. Give them place of honor. And make them pop with a modern color scheme. Nice!

Such lovely embroidery. I still enjoy making blocks like these. What you have done with the blocks is wonderful.

Oh the memories. This is the quilts my grandma would make for each grandchild and great grandkid – but she tied them – Aunt Martha’s transfers – I inherited over 50 packets . the lady with the big billowy skirt is on my pillowcases from her

Oh Lori, this is absolutely stunning! And what a great way to save those old embroideries. Just fabulous!

Great job. That inspires me to get out some old blocks that my grandmother embroidered for my daughter when she was a baby (30+ years ago). I just never could figure out what to do with them. They were done on a very thin fabric (I believe broadcloth) so probably need to fuse them to another fabric before proceeding to piece them. I just love how you updated the style with your sashing and quilting choices.

I am so glad to know what to do now with embroidery blocks. I’ve been doing a lot of embroidery lately just to have hand work to do, but I’ve never been crazy about embroidered quilts. NOW THAT IVE SEEN YOURS, I may have to have a go at it. The quilting around the embroidery is what makes it work for me.

The colors you chose to compliment the embroidery are wonderful. Such a beautiful quilt. Well done!
