Two Triangles, Free Motion Quilting Tutorial

Welcome Quilters!  Today is Tuesday and while I’m a little later than usual–I have a workhorse of a tutorial for you!

Today I offer two basic triangles, The Basic Triangle and The Arrowhead Triangle.  These two motifs will look great on any quilt that has pieced triangles (don’t they all?!) and I can picture these triangles on any Southwest inspired quilt–like arrowheads.  Also, triangle quilting complements nautical quilts–the triangles look like sailboats, and of course, this pattern would look great on any quilt that has flying geese…I guess what I’m saying…use triangles on all your quilts!

In a few weeks, we will be modifying these simple triangles to create Christmas trees and Cupid’s arrows–so let’s get started!

This is a beginner free motion quilting pattern.  Doodle the pattern for a few minutes, then start stitching!

Begin by drawing three evenly spaced “rails”.  In the sample below, the rails are 1/2 inch apart.

Begin stitching on the middle rail.  Stitch straight up. Stop.  Stitch down and to the left rail.  Stop.

Stitch straight across to the right rail.  Stop.

Stitch up and to back to the middle rail.  Next, stitch up several stitches and begin again.

Repeating to create a long chain.

The Arrowhead Triangle begins the same as the basic triangle.  Begin stitching on the center rail.  Stitch down and to the left rail.  Stop.

Instead of stitching straight across, stitch up and to the center rail.

Next, stitch down and to the right rail.

Finally, stitch to the point on the middle rail.

Continue on to create a chain of arrowhead triangles.

For further design exploration...try varying the size of the triangles and combining the two triangles within a chain.

I’m working with some heavier specialty threads and simple designs like this work best.  I’ll have more samples to show later this week.

Also, Open Line Friday will focus on needles and needle selection!

Happy Stitching,

Lori

I have often found that the simple designs work the best if the quilt has some errors on it, the unique designs pulls the eye to the quilting and not the errors, this is true of my works of art, glad to have found your blog and will enjoy future comments and tutorials!
