Halloween Quilting Projects

Good Morning, Quilters!

Wow!  I am so excited to be back here at The Inbox Jaunt!  The amazing number of comments this week demonstrate clearly that we are a passionate group of quilters!  YOUR notes about why YOU quilt, YOUR quilt “angels”, process vs product have been heartfelt and insightful!  Clearly, the quilt process is our primary reason for quilting!

(Please note that while I don’t often respond to comments(my apologies!) I read all of your comments carefully!)  I LOVE when you respond to each other–and I LOVE the idea of a retreat for Inbox Jaunters…..need to think about how we could achieve that!!????  Wouldn’t that be coo?l!!!

Pumpkin Log Cabin Quilit

OCTOBER IS ALMOST HERE!

I LOVE Autumn and I LOVE Halloween!

And I LOVE Log Cabin Quilts.

Pumpkin Log Cabin Quilit

First, I made the pillows, then with the leftover scraps, I made the little pumpkins. (My friends, Donna and Karen call this food-chain quilting.)

I just improvised– so there’s no pattern–one of the reasons I LOVE stitching the Log Cabin!

Doesn’t Ruby look young?

THROWBACKS

I made these projects five years ago… then gave them away.  (Five daughters will do that to you!)

Thinking I might make myself a new set!

What about YOU?

Can YOU believe September is on it’s way out?

Do YOU have any favorite seasonal quilts?

We’d LOVE to hear!

Also…exciting news for all of us…tomorrow!!!!

Signed,

Lincoln-Log, Lori

Yeah, I really like that cute pumpkin. Ruby was beautiful.
I want to make a pumpkin pillow for my three year old grand daughter

  • Fall is my favorite time of year.

  • Juls in FL

Ah, yes, fall in Florida….94 degrees, heat index of 102 today. Too hot to go out and mow, so I think I will stay in and quilt. Looking forward to the 80s! Maybe they will be here by Halloween. I started a new little pumpkin quilt today- everything I bought at the quilt show last weekend was orange. Definitely ready for fall :).

  • Yes! My daughter ran and got out the Halloween quilt her Dad made before he passed two years ago. It’s sort of ugly – but she was giggling saying Mom don’t you love this quilt? Yep! I sure do! All those spider and skull fabrics, but mostly because he made it. I love your blocks – the oranges are just right for the pumpkins. I think I better get sewing!

  • Kathleen

I love your log cabin pillows, especially with the blue borders. So sweet!

If I have to choose a favorite season it would have to be whichever one I’m in at the time. Aside from “too much” of anything — snow/cold, heat/humidity, rain — I very much enjoy the changes of each season. Some seasons have more “quilts” than others, but each has its share of table toppers and beagle-chair-protection. Items are more often sewn when I find inspiration while stash-diving for another project than sewn during their intended season, but that’s OK. This way I get to celebrate every holiday year round and I don’t get stale on any project since I interleave them.

  • Retreats are awesome! In fact I leave for our guild’s annual retreat in Shipshewana, IN on Wednesday – so looking forward to it. Fall is one of my favorites. But then Winter with lots of snow is great. I think I’m the only one in the state of Michigan who loves the snow – well, maybe a dozen of us. Fall is soo invigorating after the hot and muggy summer. Glad you’re back. Be kind to yourself; you and fam have been through lots.

My favorite holiday themed quilt is my half size version of “Welcome to the North Pole” by Piece O’ Cake Designs. I had so much fun creating and decorating each little building in the village. I’m already getting anxious to hang it up for the holidays!! BTW…love those pumpkin pillows!

  • OMGosh – I need to unfollow this thread because it is way overwhelming. That means that there are many, many quilters on here reading – awesome. But I do not see an unfollow at the bottom of the page ? ? ?

  • Kathy

Lori – love your little pumpkin shown above. especially the black and white fabric background. So cute. And so happy to see you back. I was sorry to hear about your Mom. I am glad you took some time off for yourself. You deserve some down time. Love this blog

Any Holiday or season is a good reason to quilt! However, there is something about Fall- right? Living in AZ now, I don’t see the signs so readily. But if I look closely, I notice subtle changes in the sky at sunrise and sunset, the different birds, and the Monarchs floating through. Now that temperatures are finally going to be less than triple digits, I can get ready for pumpkins! And, yes, will make multiple small projects for family. Thanks for the inspiration. Good to have you back.

Autumn with its gorgeous colors has always been my favorite season and Thanksgiving my favorite holiday! They remind me of childhood days, kicking around colorful leaves as I walked to and from school; of planning my Halloween costume; of smelling Mom’s turkey roasting; of a fire in the fireplace when the nights became cold and of putting up Christmas decorations.
I used to love Halloween but sadly our neighborhood has changed and we no longer have trick-or-treaters coming by so last year I made a pumpkin and autumn leaves wall hanging to give to new neighbors. They loved it and my husband and I now have new friends.
As we’ve aged, Thanksgiving has changed too (no surprise), so this year I’m making a Thanksgiving wall hanging.
The joy of quilting brings back the joy of the holidays.
The idea of a “Jaunters” retreat is a wonderful idea!!! Unfortunately traveling is something I don’t do anymore so if it ever happens, please take a zillion pictures!

Lots of love to you Lori, and to all “Jaunters”.

Now back to the sewing machine!!!!

    • Marta

Love Autumn in Wisconsin and Minnesota! I have fabric in autumn colors saved for just the right pattern when it comes along! My mom in law and my own mother loved the season. They are both gone now so I am watching for the perfect person to make the quilt for. My idea is a 20 inch maple leaf applique in the center and other patterns around it, The leaf is cut out and waiting on me.. LOL..In the meantime I am working on the handsewn quilt I agreed to for the Senior Center sale in Nov. That has
really challenged me. But glad to be experiencing something new to me.
We can’t travel far anymore either but I would love a retreat to happen for everyone!

  • vivianbring

Ditto here! Welcome Back Lori, I too have been away way too long. took me a week siting in my craft room just to clean it up and remember where I left off. Feels great to read all these posts – I especially love the colors of fall.

  • I too would LOVE an Inbox retreat!!

  • Mary B

I love the fall colors, and all the fall quilts are so beautiful. But, for some reason I seem to have mostly Christmas quilts.

  • Good morning fellow quilters. Love Minnesota and the changing seasons. Autumn and Spring are my favs but then it is difficult because Summer and Winter are favorites also. An Inbox Quilt Retreat? Hmmmm …. what a grand idea. My vote is for a Stillwater location. It has so much history to see and IF a large room could look over the St. Croix it would be p u r f e c t. Hey Lori, I volunteer to be on the planning committee. I used to set up trade shows so, although its been a long, long time from that, I think some of those skills would still be applicable. AT LEAST FOUR DAYS LONG! Like Wednesday through Saturday? ? ? But some would come for less days also. Before the Spring clean up projects; before the Autumn get-ready-projects. ? ? ? ?

  • I love reading all the comments also. It’s part of being female to find common bonds, and support one another. We are blessed to belong to such a creative, talented, and determined ( to learn/ improve) group.
Maybe Lori could teach at Quilt Canada, or other venue and we could form a “retreat” at that location. The class would fill on the first day… so give us the sneak preview!

  • Linda Kennedy

I change over the house for every season and holiday. The kids and grandkids look forward to it. My goal is a holiday quilt for every bed. Instead I love them so much, I hang them or put them over the stair rails so I see them every day. And the storing of out of season quilts is a problem. How do the rest of you store your quilts?
About the retreat, Lori, I often think about the wonderful week I had with you at JCFolk School .

  • Judy Pray

Making a pumpkin table runner. One of my favorite fall projects is a flannelnthrow done with leaves. It’s one of my earlier projects and I just took it out yesterday to enjoy again. I have missed your blog. Please accept my thoughts and prayers on the passing of your mom. I hope your memories of her and your time together bring comfort to your heart and a smile to your lips.

  • Beth S

Oh my gosh, I would LOVE an Inbox retreat! I have a great recipe for crockpot pulled pork sandwiches with coleslaw and pickles 🙂

I’m with you, Lori. This group of ladies is a special group, very loving and supportive, a great and rare thing.
After reading many posts the other day I was inspired to finish the top of a quilt my son commissioned me about 3 years ago (!) Doubts and multiple unusual obstacles made it crazily difficult; I completed many other quilts in a fraction of the time. It was nagging me that a couldn’t finish it for him. BUT I plowed ahead and he LOVEs the end product. It’s not exactly what I had in mind, but it’s exactly what he had in mind (which is the whole point of the thing, I guess). And I was fortunate enough to be able to deliver it, so I’m satisfied too.
    Now to choose that backing!

  • Sally MB

Bringing out my fall quilts is so much fun. I love the colors. Even better, one is a quilt with blocks from friends.

  • Cheri

Favorite time of year is autumn……can’t always depend on the weather tho, well when can we in Minnesota!! Getting out the large pot this week to make vegetable beef soup….yummy!
I have two Christmas themed quilts, two fall and the rest can be used year round according to all my daughters! Working on a Halloween quilt right now, first ever and I’m liking it a lot!
Love the idea of a retreat or “quiltaway” as hubs dubs it!

  • Lori Hope

My favorite (and only, so far) seasonal quilt is a Christmas quilt with appliqued snowflakes on it. I used some of your holiday motifs on the border and in the corners, and I hate to put it away at the end of the season.

  • Linda Rife

I’m working on two wool applique pumpkin pillows and a fall fabric basket for gifts. Although I love summer, I like the autumn weather and all the pretty fall decorations.

  • I forgot to add…….Ruby is beautiful. We have a house full of animals and it is tradition that we take photos of the cat and dogs with our finished quilts!

  • I’m with you. I love Autumn, Halloween and log cabins. I think I will add a log cabin pumpkin to the mix of projects I’m working on. I am working on adding to my seasonal projects so I have something quilted to display year round. I decorate the most for Halloween as it is my favorite “holiday”. I try to add to my collection of Halloween wall hangings and pillows annually but I don’t always finish the project before the holiday. That’s OK. I pack it away, pull it out the next time the holiday rolls around and work on it some more! Once Halloween is over, I check on the Christmas UFO’s I have and start working on them.

  • I love fall in Minnesota (I actually wore a sweater yesterday). I have several fall quilts that have to be up or out during the fall season. Not sure I can name a favorite though. Those pillows are so fun — now I want to make one or two!

  • Jacqui VMS

Oh help Lori ROFLOL!!! Here I am so diligently working on my UFO’s and you post the most adorable pumpkin and I see a pillow in my future! Squirrel!!!!!!!!! No, I’m going to stick to UFO’s…maybe LOL. LOVE log cabins too…that was the first quilt I made and I just need to get a log cabin out of my system every once in awhile!

Love the idea of an inbox jaunt retreat!! Unfortunately I’m a looooong ways away :-). Will you do a retreat in Canada? LOL

    • Squirrels in your house too? I’m finding them running around my sewing room too often. When I saw the pumpkin and pillow (I love log cabin blocks also) two more squirrels ran into my sewing room. Sure glad to know I’m not the only quilter w/ squirrels in her house. West Coast or East Coast Canada? Calif not far from West Canada.

    • Mary VanDoodewaard

Maybe we can drive together 🙂

  • Brenda @ Songbird Designs

I love your log cabin pumpkin block! I’m going to have to give that a try! I’m working on a table runner currently with fall colors! So glad you are back, Lori. I’ve missed my jaunt over to your inbox! LOL And, my heartfelt condolences in the loss of your mom. Mine went home almost 12 years ago, and there are days I still want to pick up the phone and give her a call! Fall always reminds me of her. She always said when you see the yellow butterflies, that is a sign of fall. She loved seeing them! Everytime I see one I’m reminded of her! It’s those happy memories that keep us going and doing what we should. So glad you are back sharing your knowledge and love of quilting with us!

  • Lorraine Doyno Evans

Wow, I missed the post about an Inbox Jaunt retreat. That would be awesome! I really don’t do anything seasonal except occassionally. It seems to take me too long to complete anything quilted for seasonal use. My husband calls our house the humbug house because I don’t decorate much inside or outside. I so look forward to your posts, Lori.

  • I am working on a massive quilt for my friends I am visiting in Norway in November. Why do I subject myself to working on a domestic machine with such a huge quilt – I think because I like to do it all myself, I rarely do seasonal quilts as I have no grandchildren

  • Rita Scott

Garden cleanup so yesterday I made tomato basil soup. I did make a couple of Halloween theme pillowcases for my grandsons. For their birthdays in November I plan to make Monster truck cases. I put out my fall and Halloween items also yesterday. Enjoy the cool weather coming, talking frost on Friday.

  • Janette Billings

I also love the change in the seasons, fall the best, love all those warm colours. Then all those crock pot meals”comfort food”.
Just finished a new autumn table runner. Maple leafs in different colours.

    • Susan

I love the change in seasons too and exactly how Janette described, and I love the leaf patterns. I can imagine how beautiful the table runner is. I haven’t started any projects for fall yet, and anything I do start might have to be for next year but I love the touches of aqua prints blended in with traditional fall colors. (such as the Autumn Love by Lori Holt) Its so pretty to me that I don’t want to cut it up! lol.
I ordered some cute snowman panels, and probably should get started on Christmas projects since I work and can only sew a bit here and there, usually in the evenings.
