This has been a real eye opener for me and I went to many websites. I finally googled “paintings of Jacob Lawrence” and choose images. So many beautiful paintings —it will take me a while to go through. Then I ended up at an NPR website showing his migrations pictures. They are heart-wrenching. Some could have been painted today. I still have so much to learn about Lawrence. Thank you Lori for sharing this with us.
To say I am blown away is putting it mildly !! The man must have never slept! His ideas of how to express a concept could not be contained in one painting, but had to be a series… amazing to say the least. I hope every last one of his works is eventually found. And I am also chagrinned to realize his work was not mentioned during my art education at a major university. A travesty! Thank you so much Lori !! Pertaining to the painting w a seamster at top of this page… anybody else wonder whether he was lefthanded or maybe he was on that side of the machine to trouble shoot?
I learned so much this morning … and I have a degree in art. Wow! So many great artists that we know so little about. And – can’t we all relate to this scene – the concentration necessary to get THAT detail just right. Thanks!
Thank you for sharing. Brought back lovely memories of NYC and my working years in Manhattan and walking through the Art Museums. Is there a fabric panel depicting The Seamstress — that would be lovely to quilt.

Yes, I thought he was on the back side of the machine as well.

Same here. But I liked it so much I ordered a couple of his books. There’s a lovely children’s version of the Great Migration.
