Good Morning, Quilters!
Today we are stitching an EASY new motif-the Roof Shingles Motif.
This motif is very easy to stitch and is the building block (pun intended) for other motifs we will learn later.
It is a great motif to fill a background quickly. You can change the look of the motif by changing the spacing between the rows and between the “shingles”
Stitching the Roof Shingles Motif
Begin by drawing parallel lines. I like to use white chalk for marking on medium or dark fabrics and Crayola Ultra Clean Washable Markers for marking on light fabrics.
Stitch along the baseline for several stitches, then stitch a narrow triangle, ending on the baseline.
Stitch along the baseline.
And add another narrow triangle.
That’s it! Could it be any easier?
To make the Roof Shingles Motif fit your quilt, adjust the spacing between the rows and between individual shingles.
Or mix sizes for more variety!
Doodle YOUR Roof
Start by doodling the basic design, then create YOUR own roof pattern. Try changing the size or shape of the triangles, adjust the line spacing or add small rows between large rows. Check out Shutterstock for inspiration.

And I’ll share a few variations next week.
Quilting doesn’t have to be complicated to look great!
As they say, “keep it simple and you have it made!”.
Happy Stitching,

This puts in my mind a pebbled or cobblestone path….

This roof shingle roof motif could be very adaptable. Also looks like a heart beat. Great motif for a quilt for someone in the medical field!

How large are the scallops?

Love your elegant simplicity style! Thank you. I’m working on a pinwheel baby quilt and am not sure how to quilt pinwheels (I’m a newbie). Any suggestions? I’d appreciate your ideas. Thanks again!

My quilting friends would always say, “It’s your quilt, do what you want.” However, I would have liked an idea or two. I’d stitch 1/4 inch from the pinwheel line inside the triangle. Missouri Quilts has a ton of ideas on their site or blog. One I recall; rounded shapes for angular quilts and linear shapes for round shapes. I just gave the opposite advice, though, didn’t I?

So appropriate. We are building a house and the shingles are stacked on the ridge. My current studio is in our detached garage…a LOVELY space..but I’ll be inside in this next house.
