Good Afternoon, Quilters!
This is Owl week here at Lori Kennedy Quilts. A pair of owls live near my house and I get a thrill from hearing them converse across the trees.
I’ve never seen them–except in shadow.
So I have to use a little imagination…
The Owl on BERNINA WeAllSew
BERNINA recently published one of my Owl tutorials (with video) on their blog and social media. (It was thrilling to see the IG video reach over 60,000 viewers!)

How to Free Motion Quilt an Owl Motif
Owls are one of the most fun motifs you will ever free motion quilt!
Nothing can go wrong.
No matter how you embellish the basic framework, your owl will be adorable or hilarious. (A few of mine are ridiculous!)
So let’s get started…
Begin by drawing a 3 inches wide by 3-1/2 inches tall rectangle. Once you have the basic Owl, change the dimensions to fit your quilt…or your backpack, pillowcase…
Begin by drawing a line 1-1/4 inches below the top line.
Start stitching in the center of the line. Stitch two messy spirals.
Add a small triangle to the messy spirals.
Stitch around the right eye and stitch a small ear.
Next, stitch over to the left ear, then stitch around the left eye.
Echo stitch back a few stitches, then stitch a large oval body.
Beginning under the right eye, add the right wing.
Next, add a rectangle for feet.
Finally, add the left wing…bringing you back to the left side.
Embellish the Owl
NOW the fun begins..
Embellish the Owl in anyway you like…add fun feathers, change the belly shape, add a Doodle Heart…
Once you’ve added your embellishments, you get to name him or her!
This is Olivia the Owl and her husband, Matt the Owl.
I wonder what a Lori owl would look like?
I’m sure she would be a wise old youthful owl– AND skinny!
Create your own family of owls…
Variations of the Owl motif may be found in American Quilter Magazine
And on pages 96-97 of More Free Motion Machine Quilting 1-2-3.

Hope YOU have time to play with the Owl motif.
Whooo, Whooo, Whooo has time to quilt today?

Lori..thank you for guiding us through that one..I would have never figured it out.
Once on a drive through a remote forest, we saw an owl sitting beside the road,
practically on it…never will forget an owl encounter.

I love all of your quilting motifs! I have used them in most of my quilts and hide them so people can try to find them. Such fun. I absolutely love the owls!

Going have to try your owls. We have an owl outside our house too. Have actually seen him once because he was standing on the little side road (highly unusual).
