The John C. Campbell Folk School-A Week in Review

John C Campbell Folk School, Free Motion Quilting

Good Morning, Quilters!

I am still unpacking from a week in the beautiful Smoky Mountains at the John C. Campbell Folk School.  As I unpack, and sort through the photos-I have a chance to reflect on the inspiring week.

We were surrounded by the natural beauty of North Carolina and the Appalachian Mountains.

Our classroom was spacious and filled with natural light.

We worked hard…

And learned a lot!

(I learned the real meaning of “Bless your heart…”)

And more tips that I’ll be sharing in the coming weeks.

We stitched a lot!

And found that with no previous experience-you CAN learn to FMQ in FIVE DAYS!!!!

It just takes focus and determination.

It wasn’t all work…

There was plenty of time for fun and games!

The BEST thing  of all….

The people you meet!

Inspired,

Lori

The fifth photo down/the seventh one up..lady in blue….I have a title for it..Not
Whistler’s Mother but “Lori’s Doodler”. Wish I had her kind of concentration… 🙂 ! Siiigh and sigh again…. Blue Lady, you are an inspiration.

  • The game looks interesting and it looks like the thread is used for incentives. Can you give me any more information about it?

It was just a funny photo – not a game!

      • Looks like poker to me! LOL Using thread for chips! Yesssss!

Read all these posts and realized it put huge smile on my face! Happy that it was wonderful for everyone!

Wow, what a great class, and setting.

I can’t because of the way my cabinet is constructed. How would it be better than the automatic hover that my Bernina does?

    • WordPress.com Support

Oh yes I forgot. More control than hover. But hover is good too!

I have already purchased next year’s date in my calendar !!

John C Campbell Folk School has always been on my bucket list. Someday….

  • OK!! that looked like a whole lot of fun!!! If there is a next time I want to come!!!!!

  • Looks like you all had a fabulous week! What a great place!

  • Aside from the great FMQ experiences shown, I love the barn quilt seen in the top photo. When I renovated the old chicken coop on our property, the final touch was a barn quilt, sized in scale to the small structure. Forget that I eliminated a structural eyesore, it’s the barn quilt that has received all of the compliments!

Lori, I am so glad, but not surprised, that you had a great week in the Great Smokey Mountains. Being from south Georgia, I have been blessed to visit the area several times. If you got an ear full of “Bless your Heart”, “You don’t Say”, or “Sho Nuff” (Sure Enough) you were with a great bunch of sincere folks. I know they were all very inspired by your talents!

I have attended classes there – not anything to do with a sewing machine. It was a class on restoring chair seats. So many traditional hand arts are being lost. It was the most relaxing, inspiring, chock full of learning week I have ever had. A wonderful place to go! My next “learning vacation” there will have to be something in the sewing “arts”. Hope you will teach there more. Your pictures brought back wonderful memories. And thank you for your great tutorials.

Thanks, Lori! It was a great week! We worked hard and had fun and, best of all, I learned that I didn’t need my stitch regulator any more! Your instruction was great, the school is great and the other quilter’s were great. I couldn’t have asked for more!

Becky, we really had a great group, didn’t we! I smile every time I think of it! YOUR next assignment is to learn to use the knee lever on your BERNINA!

  • Karen L.

Lori, Do you think you will be teaching there again next year? Looks like it was a great class with lots of good knowledge being shared.

  • I am so glad you could have that experience in my beautiful state. NC folks are so proud of the school, and we are proud of you also(.Bless your heart(in a good way!)

Bless YOUR heart–in a good way! I will laugh out loud every time I hear that expression! My sister and daughter came too–so we had a good family laugh about it–we love that we know what it means now.LOLOLOL
Love North Carolina and North Carolinans!

  • Nora J

Love! Looks like a fun week with a great group! (PS. love Aunt Pat’s socks)

  • I wonder if the “real” meaning of “Bless your heart” is the same as in Texas. That and the saying “God love her/him”. LOL I loved your pictures and to hear of the fun you had. thank you.

I am not from the South, so I don’t want to say…but it seems it’s not always a positive thing!

  • Ann Thompson

What a wonderful blessing! I’ve always wanted to spend a week at the school learning and surrounded by creative people.

  • Linda Kennedy (not related!)

It was a fabulous week. Lori inspired us, supported us and took us to new levels of machine quilting. I highly recommend working with her in person whenever the chance presents. She is not only creative and talented, but funny and sweet.

Thanks, Linda–but I do feel like you are at minimum my “sewing sister”. Have you had a chance to work on your BERNINA yet? How’s that going?
