Good Morning, Quilters!
Today’s Tuesday Tutorial is a really fun variation of an old–as in ancient–design, The Egg and Dart motif. You may recognize the pattern, though it is usually seen in architecture.
Building on Other Motifs
Last week we stitched the Roof Shingles Motif
To stitch the Egg and Dart motif, we are simply building on The Roof Shingles Motif.
Stitch the motif the same way…
Stitch the darts (or heartbeats–as so many of YOU thought of them…LOL)
And add a Messy Spiral in between…
To stitch a Messy Spiral, stitch counter-clockwise in to the center and continue ccw to stitch out of the center. End on the bottom so you can start the dart.

Variations of the Updated Egg and Dart Motif
You might want to play with this motif by adding two darts or including an open circle.
You could even add different motifs in between the darts.
Inspiration for Doodling
Doodle a few variations using these examples from Egg and Dart design in classical architecture.
The Egg and Dart as a Border
The Egg and Dart motif was one of the first Tuesday Tutorials! Try the original quilted border HERE.
There are several variations to try!
Marking and Spacing
Before starting to stitch, I recommend doodling to determine the spacing between the rows. Then mark the rows with chalk or your favorite marking tool.
I could stitch this all day…
but for some reason, I’m craving an omelet!
What about YOU?
Which variation do YOU like best?
Do YOU have a quilt that needs a border or background?
Where will YOU stitch the Updated Egg and Dart Quilting motif?
We’d LOVE to hear!
Toasting the classics in Minnesota,

I agree with Mary-it says MOM. Turn it upside down & it says WOW. MOM is a WOW! So is this fun motif!

Looks like the word “Mom” to me! Would make a cute border for a quilt gift to a new mom or a Mother’s Day gift.

Very interesting..don’t have anything to use it on currently but will file it. I like the country traditional hearts and tulips row.i am still looking for a simple row to use on border of my hydrangea quilt. The edge is scalloped.

Hey Lori! Architectural ideas abound and this one is really inticing me to give it a go! I love to look at the older buildings and try to figure out a stitching pattern, however, I’m not very good at it! Thank you for the tutorial!
