Good Morning, Quilters!

We’ve been having a few technical difficulties here at LKQ. Fortuntely, the good people at Lifted Logic were able to repair things and we seem to be up and running again… Unfortunately,  we “lost” a few posts, including the tutorial for the Sunrise/Sunset motif.  I will re-write the tutorial as soon as I can.

The Easiest Machine Quilting Knot
This week we will be focusing on machine quilting knots and working on a small nine-patch quilt.

The easiest machine quilting knot is what I call the “Curlicue Knot”–though it can be any shape.  The curlicue knot is created by stitching over a previous line of stitching.  Any time you stitch over a previous line of stitching with small stitches, you create a knot.

When stitching with light weight thread, the overstitching is hardly noticeable and your knot disappears.  However, if you are stitching with heavy weight thread (40 or heavier) the overstitching will be noticeable.  It will become a focal point-whether you intend it to be or not.  I like to turn my overstitched knots into intentional focal points by overstitching a curlicue shape.  When the curlicue is repeated over the entire quilt, it becomes a design element.

The Nine Patch Flower Quilt

In order to practice knots, let’s stitch a small nine-patch quilt.

Create a nine patch quilt with sashing and a border.

(My blocks are 3 inch finished, with 1/2 inch finished sashing and 3 inch finished outer border).

Free motion quilt a wavy line over each of the seams–or stitch in the ditch the seams.

Add a flower with a curlicue knot in each of the blocks.

We will add details to the outer border later this week!

American Quilter Winner!

Thank you to all who shared their little victories last week in our American Quilter Subscription giveaway!  I love how many of you have declared doodling as YOUR little victory!  I hate to say I told you so, but….

The winner is Kate (Kcronn).  Congratulations!!!

Industry News:  Craftsy

As you have probably heard, TN Marketing, a video streaming service-already in the hobby arena-has acquired Craftsy/Bluprint from NBC.

Last week, TN Marketing offered a live Q&A and introduction to all instructors and I am very pleased and impressed with what I saw and heard.  First of all, they are returning to Craftsy branding.  YAY! We were all happy in the Craftsy days!  Most importantly, they will honor all of the “forever” purchases we made.

It is apparent that the new Craftsy will return to the easy navigation and overall look we enjoyed.  In addition, TN is committed to creating new content as soon as possible.

Look for the new Craftsy early September.  Woo hoo!

Industry News:  BERNINA

News from the latest BERNINA Ambassador meeting:

BERNINA has introduced a beautiful Q16 quilting machine!!!  It’s a downsized (and down priced) version of the sit-down Q20.  (I quilt on the Q20 and LOVE LOVE LOVE it!)  They have also introduced new table options at a variety of price points. If you’ve ever considered a sit down long or mid-arm quilting machine, now’s the time to check in at your local BERNINA dealer.

And while you’re there….

BERNINA has also introduced a new easy-to-thread serger!  I may take up home dec sewing again–just as an excuse to buy one!  What beautiful machines!!!

MASTERY BOOKS AVAILABLE ONLINE-

In other BERNINA news, they are now offering their sewing machine Mastery Books online.  These are the workbooks for the in-store classes and have been only available when you take in-person classes for your sewing machine.  Take advantage of this offer to learn at home and at your own pace.  I’m not sure how long they will be available–though probably through 2020.

Hope YOUR day is filled with EASY Knots!

Your Embellished Quilter,

Cur-lori-cue

I love your curlicue knot idea. I’ve tried it with 30 wt. rayon thread and I have not been happy with the results – I still see loose thread ends where I stop. I’m wondering what threads you’ve found that this works best with?

    Interesting!

I ‘overlap’ stitching lines a lot when making crafts or clothing. Never thought to do it on a quilt – what a great idea! Though I’m going to need a bit more practice before using it in curlicues – I’m going to stay with the ‘old-fashioned” way in those for a while.

    Thanks Lori!!

I love the curlicue knot idea. That is so much prettier than a straight back stitch. Thanks so much.

Also very happy Craftsy is coming back, I have all 3 of your classes. They are so good, Lori and I watch them over and over. I am so happy not to have lost them and my other “forever” too!

  • Hi. You probably already have a rough draft, but I saved your Sunrise/Sunset Motif and could email to you, if needed.
    Cheers, Terri

Hi Lori, just a note on the Mastery workbooks. There don’t seem to be any for quilting machines. Clicking on that link gives nothing.

Click on the download button. There’s a 30 page workbook.

Hi Lori. I do love your site. However I am having a real problem with the background on all the pages. Lovely design but it is VERY distracting. It makes it hard for me to “tune out” when I look at instructions or photos or even now.

    • Amy Lippitt

I have to say that I agree completely with Carol. That background is VERY distracting and makes reading difficult.

  • Pat Simmons

Thrilled that craftsy is coming back!
