Good Morning, Quilters!
Before we run out of days…The Flower of the Month for March is The Daffodil.
If YOUR birthday is in March–Happy Birthday!
Daffodils are the Birth flower for March birthdays.
Daffodils are also given for 10th wedding anniversaries, and are common as Easter flowers.
Daffodils represent joy and happiness. As one of the earliest flowers of Spring, they also represent rebirth, hope, mirth and new beginnings.
Did you know…Bulbs from daffodils are harvested and processed for a chemical that aids in the treatment of Alzheimer’s?
MACHINE QUILTING-THE DAFFODIL
Daffodils don’t grow on vines, but we are going to use a little “artistic license” here and make it a vine. (Next week we will stitch another Daffodil motif that is planted in the ground like it is supposed to be…)
We are going to use a little machine quilting trick in the center of the flower so that we exit on the top of the flower….
BEGIN WITH A LOOSE SCREW
To begin, stitch a Loose Screw ending on the top of the spiral.
Stitch a wavy line back to the “vine”.
Stitch three kite shaped petals, ending on the top of the flower.
Now here’s the TRICK….
Stitch a wavy line on the right side of the spiral, back to the stem….
Then add the last two petals and trail off to begin the next flower on the vine.
Complete all the Daffodils from edge to edge…
Then echo-stitch the right side of the flowers, adding the classic Daffodil leaf–a slim line with another bent, slim leaf…
Add slim leaves between the petals and along the vine–anywhere there is a space that needs filling.
Repeat the echo stitch step on the other side of the Daffodil to complete the motif.
LAYERING IN
By stitching this motif in three passes–
- The Daffodils,
- the right-sided echo stitching and leaves, then
- the left-sided echo stitching and leaves
–you do what I call–“Layering In” –or developing a motif by adding details in different rows of stitching.
A daffodil always makes me smile!
What about YOU?
What’s YOUR favorite Spring flower?
We’d LOVE to hear!
Signed,
Your Joyful Jonquil,
Lori
