…my only sunshine, you make me happy when skies are gray….Name that tune in 15 words or less? I’m sure those of you who knew “A Bushel and a Peck” (see the Valentine Quilt HERE) will be able to help me out again. I always get these little ditties going (and repeating in my head) and I have no idea where they come from…
Today’s little vase-quilt–I love little quilts on which to put my vases and bowls…is designed using yesterday’s tutorial, Sweet Sunshine.
I added a few sunshines, a few half-sunshines, The Twist, and then a bunch of whirls and twirls…
MATERIALS/SUPPLIES
Orange Kona cotton with Aurifil 50 wt in the bobbin and Robison Anton Rayon on top…using a Schmetz Topstitch 80 needle on my Bernina 820 sewing machine (with it’s huge light). I did not use the Bernina Stitch Regulator that came with the machine. I tried it only once and never used it again. I learned without the stitch regulator and found it threw off my natural timing when I tried it later…
Does anyone else like Bananagrams–We love it around here!
Hope you are enjoying a little fun and games in the Sweet Sunshine wherever you are today!

It sounds like you have so much fun doing these projects! Beautiful!

Love your quilt, orange is my favourite colour. Amazing FMQ, going to give it another try hopefully at the weekend using your tutorials. Thanks for the inspiration.

I love this! That is mine and my oldest grandsons song. He is four and we sing that song together every time we’re together! Love the pattern!

You Are My Sunshine is close to being my all-time favorite song. I sing it to my grandbabies. I’ve been told that as soon as I started to walk, I started to dance. I’d put my family (4 others) into their respective corners in the room and then dance in the middle of the room to…You Are My Sunshine!! A Bushel and a Peck is also a song that is a favorite. These songs were a bit before my time, but I suppose they were the ones that my family liked/listened to during the first formative years in my life.
P.S. I can think of a lot of worse things to have dancing around in your mind! 🙂 Thanks for putting some sunshine in my life, Lori

This is stunning, absolutely stunning.

Thanks, Laura!

Wow you have such a way of putting all that together and end up with such a cute piece!! Love that! Hey..whats a bananagram?? I have jet lag…not sure I’ll be doing any cutting or sewing today…don’t trust my brain..haha! But I’m fixin’ to head downstiars to gather my UFO’s and get on the band wagon with all y’all now that I am home. (picked those to up down south..heehee!…not sure what I did without the word “fixin'” before now!!) I doubt I’ll be able to keep away from the sewing machine…might have to just doodle a few on a scrap just for fun. As always…fun stuff Lori!!!

“You Are My Sunshine” –Written by former Louisiana State Governor Jimmie Davis and Charles Mitchell. Copyright 1940 and 1977 by Peer International Corporation. This song is one of two official songs for the State of Louisiana.
The governor used it in his campaign.

Love the history. It’s certainly a catchy little tune!

they sing it on that George Clooney movie…Brother Where Art Though…hilarious! The big pants on the politicians in that show cracked me up!

I love your tutorials and have tried some of them on my smaller pieces. Your stitches are so nice – mine always turn out too small – no definition. I have tried going faster but doesn’t seem to help. I will keep practicing.
Lori Kennedy
Practice makes perfect…you will get there!
Marianne
This piece is perfectly gorgeous! You are an amazing quilt artist! I have a BSR too, but I haven’t used for your same reason. However, I’ve never come microscopically close to the quality of your wonderful work. I’m makes me happy, both encouraging and inspiring me. Thank you!
Lori Kennedy
Thanks, Marianne. It will come…I promise!

I live in Destin Fl. and my first thought when I saw your quilt design was “starfish.” I love the look of your quilting. If only I could do that.
Lori Kennedy
It DOES look like a starfish…perhaps I need to work on a bunch of seashells…thanks for the idea!

Good Morning, Love the “you are my sunshine” I am looking forward to trying that out, it is SO cute. Right now, I’m on a baby watch so no sewing. Spending everyday with my daughter while her husband at work. Baby due Friday. Hope the sun comes out soon out your way. We are inundated with Sun – all week it has been 70-72. We are in such a drought, Finally, this morning woke up to rain. It is supposed to rain for 4 days, yeah. Have a great day everyone!
Lori Kennedy
Karen, So thrilling to be on baby-watch. Lot’s of sunshine coming your way!
Marta
That beloved song is a staple in our extended family’s favorite songs and certainly fits your Sweet Sunshine Vase Quilt…uh… what does “vase” mean in that context? Thanks…
Lori Kennedy
Hi Marta, I call the little quilts I make “vase quilts” because they are too small to be table runners, and I use them under all of my vases and bowls for a little extra color!
Bea
some of those pictures look like starfish!! i think the sunshine could go to the beach! thanks for the inspiration (and my stencils that i won a while back — getting close to having time to practice some FMQ)
Doreen
They appeared to be starfish to me also….I couldn’t quite put the ‘sunshine’ thoughts together in the post!!!! Duh!!!! My BSR has been only used twice……..once when the store gal demo’d it for me and once when I got it home. Back in the box it went for the exact reason you stated. Happy camper (me) now!!!!!!!
Lori Kennedy
They DO look like starfish! Funny, I didn’t see it before!

I just called the airport–I can be at your house by 6:30 am! I’m packing my bags right now…oh, if only…

Lori,
YOU are becoming my morning ritual. It’s nice to have you saying HI to start the day.
” You Are My Sunshine” is by Jimmy Davis and Charles Mitchell. But there’s more. See this wikipedia piece
and
the University of Arizona article

Thanks, Pat–what a nice thing to say! Thanks for the links-fascinating. Do you ever wonder where all these little tunes originate. So nice to know the history!

your quilting is so inspirational! I enjoy reading each and every one of your daily messages. It is -24 degrees celcius here in Toronto, Canada this morning. Will enjoy my day keeping warm in my sewing room! Much too cold for outdoor activities for me. 🙂
Judy
Absolutely beautiful. Must try it!! It is snowing almost to a white-out stage this a.m. and I have to get out into it and go to work. But the sunshine in my heart will break through this as I walk into my day.
Jody Beitzel
Your beautiful “sunshine” is bright spot in my morning. Snowing outside, sunshine inside= perfect start to my day. I love the sunshine stitching.
Kerri Ribinson
I was just singing that to my little granddaughter yesterday morning. I sang that to my children when they were little! I love your “sweet sunshine” FMQ….I love all your designs, you are so kind to share them! When I saw your latest tutorial I first thought they were starfish….but I had just finalized plans for a MAy trip to Destin FL! The beach was on my mind as I sit here in cold KS!
Mary Huey
I appreciate seeing the design used on a piece to see how it fits together and can be filled around — thanks and I hope you at least get some outside sunshine today, too. We’ve had more sunshine this winter than I can recall in many years — Lake Erie is frozen and that cuts down on the clouds!!
Gerry Casper
I’m taking a guess here, and saying the tune is, “You Are My Sunshine, My Only Sunshine”. I remember the words, but not the title.
“You are my sunshine, my only sunshine.
You make me happy when skies are gray
You’ll never know, Dear, how much I love you.
Please don’t take my sunshine away.”
I, too, live in Mn. Thank you so much for all your wonderful tutorials. Do you give workshops, or teach at retreats?
