Happy Valentine’s Day, Quilters!

Today we have an EASY–BEGINNER quilt motif!

As you know, I LOVE Spirals, but they are challenging…

(Read Four Steps to Perfect Spirals–my first ever online tutorial—HERE)

To help Beginners get the look of Spirals without the stress, I added The Messy Spiral Rose HERE

Christmas Rose, FMQ, Kennedy

And now I’ve discovered another EASY Spiral for everyone (beginners and advanced) to enjoy:

THE SILLY SPIRAL-A FREE MOTION, MACHINE QUILT TUTORIAL

Begin by drawing parallel lines–any spacing that suits YOUR quilt.  In the sample below, the lines are one inch apart.

Begin stitching on the line.  Stitch a short line and stop.  This stopping point will be the center of the Silly Spiral.

Then begin stitching a circle–clockwise or counterclockwise-whichever is easier for YOU!

Continue stitching revolutions around the stopping point…

Add as many layers as you like–two, five, seven…..

Once the spiral is complete, stitch to the drawn line and stitch along this line.  Remember, wherever you stop will be the center of the next spiral–so be sure to allow enough room.

That’s it!

This motif is easy–because the spacing between rows is easier than for regular spirals.

Doodle Silly Spirals first…then get right to your sewing machine…

We will make a small change to this pattern to create another motif I call “Loose Screws”–coming soon!  So be sure to practice!

Signed,

YOUR Silly Seamstress,

Lori

Roundie-Round Spirals….love circles and all things ROUND. This gives me a fabulous idea for quilting the wonky squares on my mom’s quilt I’m making. MUCH THANKS!!! ***smiles***

  • This may be silly but I love this tutorial! It is such a lot of fun…. will definitely be adding this to a project soon! Thank you!

Thank you Lori! I love spirals and this inspires me to practice and give them a try.

  • Fun spirals! Reminds me of the tension springs inside the old Kenmores!!

Love these. I especially love the messy rose. I really like this type of line fmq because it is so easy to do a few and stop and you are not stopping in the middle of the quilt, your starts and stops can be off the quilt, and you feel you have accomplished something if you only have an hour or so to quilt. I just love your quilting demos! Gosh you are so talented!!
