They are a wonderful reminder of our family’s history. I was just talking to my mother-in-law over the weekend. She said that when she was a little girl, her Dad would take her to the feed store and let her choose the ones she wanted for a dress. It took 1 1/2 sacks to make a dress for her. My mother also told many stories about flour sack dresses for my older sisters, too, as they were born during the end of the depression era. They were resourceful. It is a good reminder to reuse and repurpose.
Attended a Quilt Show this weekend sponsored by a local Quilt Guild. As a part of the event they had invited a showing of antique quilts made from feed sacks as well as some of the old feed sacks amassed by the owner of the display. Loved seeing and reading about all of those lovely masterpieces! Didn’t take any pics or I’d share some with you. (sorry) Amazing work!
LOVE feed sacks! My DIL takes the side seams apart, presses it really well, and uses them for table runners. LOVE this football one – perfect for the season!
The feed sacks bring back many memories, when my parents & I would travel back to Texas armed with all our feed sacks, All the lady relatives would sit at the old round oak table armed with their print feed sacks. The trading started until everyone was satisfied that they had enough sacks that were alike to make a dress, etc. Then the visiting started and an unbelievable amount of food was placed on that same old oak table. What wonderful memories!

I have some smaller feed sacks that I rescued from my grandmother’s home…these are fabulous!
