The Finnish women never shirked on their housekeeping or their child rearing. One hard working class of people, to be highly respected. And, just think, they gave us the sauna, which is an old old ritual from the old country. Nothing like a sauna in a Finnish sauna, where whole families go into the sauna and if it is winter time, you go out and roll in the snow. True!
Not sure what year it was happening, but my grandmother told me about her “foremothers” setting the iron on the hearth in front of the fire and heating it up. Then they ironed fast and set it back to be reheated when it cooled off. That required a fire in the fireplace year round to do
the best job on clothing. There is a reenactment of long ago practices in a laundry house out back, separate from a mansion in Tallahassee, FL. I am sorry, I forget the name of it now but definitely a tourist attraction. The scene was very much like this painting. However, full laundry process was not undertaken each and every day! This artist did a superb job..love it. Would love to have it hanging in my laundry room!

How blessed we are to have electricity. I can only imagine how much work that would be. No permanent press and no heat in that iron.j
