I still mend, when it’s something I really like. I’ve even been known to turn a collar on my husband’s shirt (his all time favorite), which made it last 2 more years. I’ve done plenty of sock darning, which my father taught me using a light bulb, now I own my own darning egg.
I can remember my Grandmother darning socks and Lyle stockings (anyone else remember them). She would spend hours at the kitchen table darning, my Grandfather sitting at the other end smoking his pipe (no TV). When my Grandmother passed away she had a whole drawer of new Lyle stockings that she had been saving for “good”. The painting you shared brought back some beautiful memories for me. Thank you.
I enjoyed reading the artist’s comments and seeing his other pictures. Am I dating myself if I remember the wood ironing board? At least my mother had an electric iron, LOL.
Several weeks ago I picked up a darning egg (for darning socks). The surface was totally covered with tiny holes from a needle. I think that it honors the work that someone did. Bespeaks of times when people didn’t just throw things away.

She is mending a quilt handed down from the artist’s wife’s relative…love his paintings. Wonder where she left her glasses ? !!

I love this painting. The color is beautiful and one can feel the frustration and effort the women is putting forth.

Clearly, mending is not her favorite thing, either!! I love her face.
