The Easiest Flower and Variations

Machine Quilting, Flowers and Leaves, Lori KennedyGood Morning, Quilters!

Just time for a quick visual tip….

Our  New Leaf motif  looks great when combined with any flower motif!

Here I combined it with The Crabapple Blossom machine quilting motif.

The densely quilted leaf contrasts well with more open motifs like flower and give them “POP”.

My first book, Free Motion Machine Quilting 1-2-3 contains an entire chapter of flower motifs and my second book, More Free Motion Machine Quilting 1-2-3 includes fan favorites like Easy Breezy Flowers (p. 72) and the Classic Marigold (p.80) that would combine with The New Leaf for a gorgeous background fill!

(Both books contain a variety of design and Skillbuilding techniques)

Hope YOUR day is filled with lovely flowers!

(and a little time to tip toe through them!)

You’re so very talented. There is no way I would ever be able to quilt like that.

I’m enjoying all you notes. I’m a new quilter and have only finished one. thanks again for your tutorials.

      Congratulations on your first quilt!

  • Love that, Lori! I’ll add that to my “must try” motifs!

Ok, I have a little dilemma.. As our 10 yr old ( today) grandson says to me, “Gram, I have a QUESTion for you.” My question is should I buy a slider thing for doing free motion work. My family gave me a nice gift certificate for Mother’s Day to a quilt shop. My free motion efforts have been what I would call rudimentary, and I wonder if using a slider is how to advance some skill.
I realize this is not free discussion Friday but I will be without wifi beginning on Wed this week for probably 2-3 weeks. Anybody have an opinion for me? Thank you !!

I use a Supreme Slider and feel it helps a lot. It is well worth the money.

I use a Supreme Slider for few, and I think it helps a lot. It makes moving the quilt so much easier!

Marta, what do you mean by slider? I have an attachment for my Pfaff that part of the quilt rests on. It “slides” around easily allowing you to free motion quilt a foot square area. With this attachment the Pfaff has stitch regulation. Great idea in theory. I’ve found it a bit restrictive on a large quilt, with Lori’s FMQ directions giving better results.
I’ve also seen a horseshoe shaped unit with handles that is supposed to make FMQ projects easier to slide around. I haven’t tried this yet.
Whatever you get, try to find lessons or a trial on the gizmo. Both would probably be useful with practice, and you will probably find proponents of both. But with a lot of practice You can become a bit better that rudimentary without spending money on the hardware.

Oh… this is SOooooo gorgeous! I could say lovely, beautiful, pretty, but those words are already hung on to it !! Think I might do this instead of some appliques I was thinking of doing. The contrast between petals and leaves really make each of them stand out to me. I love the double line of stitching around them both. Way to go, Lady Lori !

  • Granny G

VERY cool!!! I love the way you’ve “overlapped” the leaves in the purple line drawing.

  • Oh, Lori, I love this! But I do have a question for you. I notice that you typically do your tutorials on solids. Do you recommend that most of the things you teach be sewn on solids? I am currently working on a quilt for daughter in which I am trying to do a different motif in each section of different fabric (it’s a lattice effect) and I would like to try this one, but not sure if it would be too busy on the fabric I want to try it on. Its reads kind of like a solid from a distance but does have a distinct pattern with white mixed in. I can send you a picture of this particular fabric if that helps.

I like how the densely quilted leaves show off your flowers. I too am going to quilt a variety of motifs on some different sized large blocks on my mother’s feed sacks made into a modern quilt for my niece’s wedding gift. They too are quite floral and I’m not sure how I plan to quilt them. What do you suggest on busy floral prints?

  • Carol Fleming

    Very pretty, Lori.

Lori, Thank you so much for sharing all of your quilting ideas. I am enjoying learning so much!

  • Nancy B from Ohio

Absolutely lovely! Wish mine looked half that good! The lovely lavender color doesn’t hurt either! ;o)
