Good Morning, Quilters!

I want to thank all of YOU for your well wishes and all of you who purchased Creative Quilting:  From Doodle to Design!

I think we may have hit the record for first day enrollments!??

Don’t forget, I will be offering a 50% discount all week!

Doodle to Design, Craftsy, Lori Kennedy

There is so much jammed in to the two-hour class–

You get to keep the class forever-and if you need to review, you can use the thirty-second repeat button

My kids would just LOVE that…they could hear me repeat myself with the click of a button!!

(Shoot–there’s a mute button, too!)

QUILT-A-LONG REVIEW

Welcome to Week Three of our Mystery Nautical Quilt-a-Long-

We could call it “Machine Quilting Success in Fifteen Minutes a Day”–Because YOU WILL BE SUCCESSFUL with this easy project!–You will finish with an adorable quilted sampler to use in your sewing room or to give as a gift.  (Mine is a baby gift-to be personalized with the baby’s name and birthdate.)

Week One-Quilt Sandwich

Week Two-Mark the Horizontal Composition, Stitch the outlines.  Stitch Rows 1 and 14.

We also doodled to get a head start for this week.

WEEK  THREE SCALLOPS

This week we will stitch Rows 6 and 10.

Stitch row 6 with upside down scallops.

Stitch very shallow scallops from left to right all the way across the row.

DEVELOPING YOUR SENSE OF SPACING

I stitched 9 scallops across, but you should stitch scallops that are comfortable to you.   I don’t recommend marking…(for me it takes the joy out of quilting.)  Instead, work on developing your sense of spacing…

As you get close to the edge, (about three scallops away) use your finger to determine the spacing–In other words, use your finger like a pencil to trace the imaginary stitching line for the last three scallops…if they don’t fit, try again, making them a bit smaller…if they really don’t fit-maybe there is only room for two?…

It’s okay if it isn’t perfect (for this project at least)…we are aiming for a hand drawn look–not pantograph perfection!

Finish stitching the last three scallops.

Without breaking your thread, stitch back from right to left with deeper scallops.

ROW TEN:   SCALLOPS

For Row Ten, stitch right side up scallops.

If you doodle a variation that you like, stitch that instead.

Your Nautical Sampler should look something like this:

Perfectly Imperfect!

Not to sound too philosophical–but isn’t that just like all of us?  Works in progress–perfectly imperfect!??

May YOUR stitches be happy!

  • I access your blog on an ipad mini. The pictures on this quilt along are extremely tiny. So I try to zoom to see what I’m supposed to be doing, but the pictures are out of focus. Is there another place on the blog that will show me larger pictures of this step?

Several people are having trouble with viewing on an iPad. Have you updated the free software update?

      • Odd. How does an iOS update focus the photos? I’ve not had any difficulties with other web sites’ pictures.

I’m not sure. Anyone help us here??

Have viewed your first class twice, but could go over it again, thats what I love about Craftsy classes. Started your second class and want to take it slow as you do with us and get it right. You are a great teacher. Also doing the whole cloth project and want to get going on it also.
Thank You so much for sharing with us – Appreciate all you do, keeps me motivated.

I signed up the first day your class went live! I can’t wait to view it. I’m doing this machine quilt-along too — at least I will be when I get home from vacation. I love and respect your work, Lori.

I don’t have a problem going from left to right because my sandwich is already rolled up under the machine but when I go from right to left and I have to roll it as I go I have a lot of trouble because I have to start and stop (to roll it so it fits). Can you make a suggestion please? Should I just turn it around on my way back?

    • A

There really is no easy answer. Try both ways. If you turn it around, you may have to stitch upside down–so doodle first!
Take heart in knowing this is challenging for everyone. Some people roll their quilts, others “squish”. I do a combination and sometimes I turn the quilt around and quilt upside down!

Looking forward to adding two more lines to my Nautical QAL. Could you add a link to this QAL under the Mystery QAL tab at the top of the blog? Also, thanks for the discount for your Doodle to Design class. I’m already watching and enjoying.

I asked a question on one of the posts from last week, and would not have a clue now where to find the answer… Obviously, I am a newby and have not been consistent in reading.

Re: the Doodle to Design class. We use a fat quarter? How far apart do we draw the lines after prepping the quilt sandwich. I did find a post from the last week in March about the sandwich, but what are you recommending for the class.

I loved watching the 1st class last night! I sat doodling with my finger the first time…I will find a pencil and paper today to practice with. I need to read and watch a time or two before really practicing!!! Thank you….

Will you be in a booth or doing any teaching at the Minnesota Quilt Show (I think in June at St Cloud?)

  • I got your class yesterday and have already started watching. I am anxious to finish it. My quilt sandwich is up to date and ready for this week’s quilting!
