“I LOVE HOME” BLOCK OF THE MONTH GIVEAWAY

Win! Win! Win! a fat quarter bundle of this gorgeous fabric by Sarah J. Maxwell!

It is time for our September “I Love Home” Block of the Month giveaway–and time to start quilting Block 2.

BLOCK TWO PATTERN

Pop over to Jacquelynne Steve’s Art of Home to download the pattern.

For my quilt, I changed the color way so I can add the house pattern in free motion quilting.

Jacquelynne Steeves, I Love Home, Block One

TIME TO DOODLE

The best time to begin planning the machine quilting is while you are piecing the blocks.  I like to draw the shapes to be quilted onto a note pad and doodle quilt ideas while I’m watching TV.

It’s a great way to try out ideas before stitching.

DOODLE IDEAS

I recommend you draw the basic house and then look at different motifs to decorate. (HINT:  There are a wide variety of motifs available in Free Motion Machine Quilting 1-2-3:  Easy Loops, Scallops, Hearts, Tulips, Dizzy Daisy, The Basic House, Trees…. Get a signed copy (along with a little surprise) from my Etsy shop HERESLEEP ON IT

It is best to doodle on several different days.  The first design is rarely the best design and by working over several sessions, you allow your subconscious to work on it as well!

WIN! WIN! WIN!

To win the fabric bundle, please leave a comment.  Tell me…Do YOU doodle before you machine quilt?  Has YOUR subconscious ever solved a problem or helped you with a design?  Do you do your own quilting?  Or just say “Hi!”

(To leave a comment, click on this comment symbol next to the blog post title…It looks like this:  (it may have a different number)

MORE CHANCES TO WIN

KEEPING BUSY

That is a lot of quilting to keep you busy!

Speaking of busy…I’m off to Madison, Wisconsin for The Quilt Expo!  Please join me for a little machine quilting.  I will be demo-ing (is that a word?)  a variety of machine quilting motifs each day at 11:30.  Hope to see YOU there!

Signed,

The Happy Home-Doodler,

Lori

Just purchased a bound sketch pad so I can keep track of my doodles – need to be less critical of my doodles – it is better to finish than to wait until it is perfect!!

  • Joni Keskey

Yes, I doodle often before quilting. I also keep a notebook of fmq designs. Helps when I’m stuck, wondering what to quilt sometimes.

  • Ellen

Perfect timing! I haven’t seen all summer because I have been busy moving….now it’s time to get back to quilting 3 quilt tops that are ready and almost ready! I’m a little rusty, so the practice will be helpful. I like the idea of drawing the pieces block and practicing on it. And the fat quarters are whetting my appetite for my next project!

  • Dixie M

Afraid I need to GET doodling ….. brain is not clued in to many shapes so I find doing my own quilting is the last thing I care to do. Thanks for all your tips, you make it look so easy!

  • Jacqueline V

    Hiya Lori,
I have long enjoyed your FMQ designs on Pinterest!
I actually doodle more than I quilt! I have a large sketch book I keep by the sofa and can spend an afternoon doodling away or working up a new to me FMQ pattern.
    Thanks & Quilty Huggs!

  • Anne Godwin

Thanks for the Craftsy reminder. Love the way you share…

  • Regina DeCapite

I don’t doodle as much as I should but I do doodle before I start a new free motion quilting design. And I have your book by my side. Love your blog!

  • Terry Butz

I’ve been following your blog for a while now and am working up confidence to start free-form quilting. Your motifs look fun.

  • Christine Miller

I love to doodle and shadow quilt! Doodling gives great thinking time!

  • kkfboise

I’ve been doodling since childhood when on the phone or in a meeting; something to do while just sitting and listening. Maybe that’s why now at 70 I have to force myself to doodle just to doodle before beginning a quilting session. You are so right about trying different ideas and letting them settle. I also like the idea of thinking of your design WHILE you’re making the top.

  • MS Barb

Thank you for all your tips on quilting, doodling, reminding your readers about the free Crafty classes today! Enjoy the Holiday!

  • Thunder

I quilt by hand or walking foot.

  • I do doodle before machine quilting! It think it definitely helps!

  • Joanna Perry

I have a little notebook with doodles in it and refer to it for ideas on quilting. I do my own quilting, but wish I were better at it.

  • I love the black and white of doodling! I just can’t sit still and watch tv or sit in lectures so I doodle! I’ll use them as coloring pages later for my granddaughter!! Love your designs!

  • I have used a lot of straight line quilting, but I have also tried the free motion based more on doodling after I found your website. I used it for spirals and I still have the quilt sandwich to do the sunflower after we are more settled (in the middle of a moving sequence:). I am planning to do more doodling and drawing because it makes so much sense to get it in your hands before your hands hit the quilt:).

  • I don’t do a lot of Fmq, but when I do it’s just all over type

  • Shelly Elaine

My FMQ skills clearly show that I do need to doodle more. Love your book!

  • Sherry

I use a small dry erase board to practice my design before I free motion quilt. It helps but I think doodling on paper is my next step to improving my quilting. Thank you so much for all of your help!????

  • sherrillash

I have been doing my own quilting and have used a few of your doodle motifs. It definitely helps to doodle before quilting!

  • Suzette G

I’m a doodler from way back. I doodle on paper, then just before quilting I practice on a dry erase board that I keep in my sewing room. Thanks for your great designs.

  • judy purcell

I doodle new designs before I quilt them! I do all my own quilting, too.

  • Patricia Evans

I’ve been trying all morning to watch the craftsy videos, but the site must be overwhelmed. None of the shows I’ve chosen will load.

  • Joyce Carter

I don’t “Doodle”, but I get my best quilting ideas in the middle of the night. Thank you for the giveaway.

  • Carolee Herechski

Loving the I Love Home BOM, I am a bit of a novice to crafting, but love quilting and embroidery. The fabric for this giveaway looks beautiful!

  • Carol W

I often doodle and it is helpful.

  • I am new to doodling and free motion quilting. It is coming right along tho! It is so much fun! Doodling helps your mind stay on track when you are actually sewing the design.

  • Phyllis

Yes, I doodle and practice on extra pieces. Look at the quilt design, ponder, then try different designs that may enhance it. It takes time and patience and sometimes the quilt talks to you!!

  • Marti Morgan

I love free motion quilting and have tried the doodle thing, just can’t conquer it yet – but do doodle with my machine on scrap “sandwiches”

  • Brenda Hulsey

I’m afraid I haven’t ventured off an all over stipple or doodle just yet.

  • Susan L.

No, I don’t doodle before I machine quilt. I probably should. Maybe it would help me be more creative. Any larger quilts I make, I do send out. I like them done on a longarm much better than anything I could do on my sewing machine.

  • BrendaW

Doodling all the time, working on that muscle memory. But I need to keep a notebook because I forget where I have put my doodles when it comes time to sew! Thanks for the motivation!

  • Jean Kahr

Hi, I’m not much of a doodler. I rather just play on my machine. 🙂 I enjoy your blog and your book, and will be trying out your classes today!

  • Kim John-Trewren

ILoveHomeQuilt You are a genius with your free motion designs…my doodles end up looking like scratches but I will “continue to doodle”!

  • Bibi Bellotto

I do doodle for each new design til I have the pathway. I’ve recently realized that I need to doodle longer to do a better job of the motif spacing. Thanks, Lori. I’ve learned so much from you and each time I demo something for my friends, I refer to you!

  • I do doodle, but it’s usually while on phone.

  • Your doodle designs are an inspiration! Love your blog and your book.

  • Brenda Wall

I want to learn how to quilt on my home machine, but right now my quilting method is by check. My quilter and I agree wonderfully on designs. Since it is Labor Day I am heading back to Craftsy to take advantage of watching your videos. Thanks for your inspiration.

  • Carolyn

I’m still at the “I’m gonna try machine quilting” stage so I don’t doodle but I’ve certainly had my subconscious solve other types of problems overnight!

  • Marianne

Hi! Your doodles and my doodles look very different!! It’s a great idea to doodle on paper before quilting the block!

  • Pam Kosirog

I am trying to learn to doodle! I would love to win the fabric!

  • Megen Wilson

I was a bit rusty at FMQ when I started last week and really stuck w/o details to my design…So I doodled and then drew the half square triangles and doodled some more…then I pulled out my practice felt and drew half squares on that and solved the traveling problem and worked out the spacing. Now I am almost done the top-thanks for being a great teacher

  • Connie Cain

Being a newbie, I have done any doodling. Just stitch in ditch so far. 🙂

  • Sandy R.

Your doodles are so inspiring and look easy enough for me to do but I find it is harder than I thought but I’ll try to keep on doodling until I get it!!! Thanks

  • Chris R

I rarely doodle, I just can’t draw, but somehow I’m able to FMQ fairly easily. If I do get stuck I just stop my machine and use my finger to ‘point’ my way out. It works.

  • I had not doodled before signing up to receive your blog posts, but I find it does make a terrific difference! I still am not religious at doing it (sometimes just dive in to the FMQ stage), but I am trying to be better!

  • Paula

Your doodles are such great inspiration! I try to quilt my own projects, but I have limited abilities in that department, so I do sometimes have them professionally quilted. I love being able to say I did this myself, but some are too special and deserve more than my straight lines, serpentine stitch, or meandering. Thanks for sharing.

  • Kathy Slaughter Cummings

I do my own quilting!! I must start doodling!! Thank you!

  • Mary Rose

I really have to work at doodling but your tutorials really help with that. I love piecing but also love the idea of doing my own quilting. Have only done lap size quilts so they are easier to handle on my machine. Someday The quilts will be bigger!

  • Vicki H

I think about the quilting as I am sewing the top and usually as I fall to sleep in the evening.
