“I LOVE HOME” BLOCK OF THE MONTH GIVEAWAY
Win! Win! Win! a fat quarter bundle of this gorgeous fabric by Sarah J. Maxwell!
It is time for our September “I Love Home” Block of the Month giveaway–and time to start quilting Block 2.
BLOCK TWO PATTERN
Pop over to Jacquelynne Steve’s Art of Home to download the pattern.
For my quilt, I changed the color way so I can add the house pattern in free motion quilting.
TIME TO DOODLE
The best time to begin planning the machine quilting is while you are piecing the blocks. I like to draw the shapes to be quilted onto a note pad and doodle quilt ideas while I’m watching TV.
It’s a great way to try out ideas before stitching.
DOODLE IDEAS
I recommend you draw the basic house and then look at different motifs to decorate. (HINT: There are a wide variety of motifs available in Free Motion Machine Quilting 1-2-3: Easy Loops, Scallops, Hearts, Tulips, Dizzy Daisy, The Basic House, Trees…. Get a signed copy (along with a little surprise) from my Etsy shop HERESLEEP ON IT
It is best to doodle on several different days. The first design is rarely the best design and by working over several sessions, you allow your subconscious to work on it as well!
WIN! WIN! WIN!
To win the fabric bundle, please leave a comment. Tell me…Do YOU doodle before you machine quilt? Has YOUR subconscious ever solved a problem or helped you with a design? Do you do your own quilting? Or just say “Hi!”
(To leave a comment, click on this comment symbol next to the blog post title…It looks like this: (it may have a different number)

KEEPING BUSY
That is a lot of quilting to keep you busy!
Speaking of busy…I’m off to Madison, Wisconsin for The Quilt Expo! Please join me for a little machine quilting. I will be demo-ing (is that a word?) a variety of machine quilting motifs each day at 11:30. Hope to see YOU there!

I doodle and quilt on a practice piece before tackling my quilt.
Lori M
I am a Doodler…easier for me to picture how it will look on fabric 🙂 Thank you for all you share with us!! (& also for chance to win your give-a-way too!)
Shirley
I am a much better quilter than doodler! I try to visualize before quilting and this does involve hand doodling.
Jenny Garcia
I do doodle but find that it’s usually easier for me to sew it than to draw it so my doodles and my quilting don’t very often look the same.
I love this blog (it’s really the only one I follow) and look forward to getting it in my inbox every day. Thanks!!
Karen
I do my own quilting, but not free motion. I use my embroidery machine for most of it and some with rulers.
Denice
I almost always doodle my way into my quilting patterns.
kerrid77
I’m terrible a doodling! I have only done in the ditch & fancy stitches in the ditch on baby quilts. Free motion on anything larger looks like an Olympic sport! I keep trying to talk my doodling hubby into joining me on my quilting adventure, but so far, no luck… 🙁
Lee
I do my own quilting and am a “sometimes” doodler! tks!!
Cherie Burton
Thinking of designs for a hunter star quilt.
Verna A.
I started doodling before quilting after reading about it here on your blog, and I find it is helpful! Once I brought a notebook along on a long road trip, and spent a good amount of time doodling. It was surprising to see how much my designs had improved after some practice!
Bette Mclennan
I do my own quilting. Can’t say I doodle first very often. Get ideas from pictures & some machine quilting tutorials.
Rosie Westerhold
I always think that since I have done the design many times before, I don’t need to doodle first. WRONG! I now ALWAYS doodle the design on paper first just to refresh my muscle memory. My first stitches are usually not my best, either. But, as I go along, I find that old muscle memory coming back, and things will usually look much better within a few minutes.
Betsy
Lori I have never doodled but I have dreamed about a quilt issue and solved it in the dream
patty
I just love your house doodles! Depending on what design I am about to try, I may doodle on paper. I do always try it on a scrap fabric.
jean whiteaker
Always doodle before quilting — it helps “train my brain” for a great stitch! Enjoy your blogs very much, thank you!
Ellen Krane
I am building courage to quilt a full quilt, and watching videos make it fun to learn!
bbquiltmaker
I doodle on paper when just thinking of designs I like. I draw on plexiglas with an expo marker set directly on the quilt when ready to plan the actual quilting. It really helps me focus on how to stitch the design.
Lynne F Williams
I doodle and find new designs by mistakes I make as I doodle along. New creations are fun to uncover.
Judy
Yes, I doodle. While I’m piecing the quilt my mind is usually in a flurry thinking of designs that I’ve either tried or would like to try. Doodling helps sort things out!
Joan M
I love your doodling on the house block. This is something that I’d like to try.
Carol A Jensen
I doodle to “practice” as well as to plan placement. I agree that it does help.
Teri
I doodle the design a lot before I start to quilt. there have been a few times that after doodling for hours, I still don’t feel like I can do it and I change the design.
I also doodle at work when I am on the phone. I just took a stress management class at work and they encouraged us to doodle and color.
Deb B
I never thought a lot about doodling until I started reading your blogs. I still try to quilt before doodling but am starting to realize how much better things turn out if I doodle first!
Jane
I do keep a notebook for doodling quilting designs, some come from designs I see on the net, but lots from your tutorials. Practice to get the right size for the quilt I’m working on at the time. Do all my own quilting, both longarm and domestic machine. Love your work! Learn a lot from it!
Brenda Dunne
I try to doodle when learning a new design, and it helps. Leisure time is scarce, and it takes patience to doodle when I just want to be sewing.
Rochelle Summers
While quilting my current quilt, I have been wishing I gave more thought to the quilting way back when. Lesson learned. I love seeing your thoughts as you go along. Thank you.
Shelly
I just love your quilt doodling, yes I always doodle before I quilt my own.
MissQuilterB
I can quilt better than I can doodle, but since following your blog, I doodle more now. Thank you for letting us enter the drawing. I love your blog.
Jane Charnley
I don’t doodle but I am finding that I am thinking about how I will quilt the block as I am piecing it. It used to be that I had no idea how to quilt my tops but thanks to blogs like yours , I am beginning to enjoy the machine quilting almost as much as the piecing!
Linda E
After seeing your doodled house blocks, I’m inspired to give doodling a try! Thank you for sharing your technique and the chance to win.
bucklady
I too like to doodle and sleep on it and also do a scrap machine doodle of at least some of the parts before deciding for sure.
Angela J Short
Cool block and awesome doodles! I haven’t tried doodling first yet! angielovesgary2 atgmail dotcom
Pam
I quilt my small projects, but I don’t doodle. My bigger quilts go to a LAQ.
Carol
I doodle sometimes…other times not!
Mary
Almost always doodle!!!
Nancy
I keep a folder of quilt designs that I pull out when I need ideas. I have a plexiglass that I put over my quilt to “test drive” and see if I like them, and if I can actually quilt it. Thanks for sharing the great giveaway!
Marta
Eureka, I was wondering what to do with a piece of plexiglass I came into. Thanks for the idea.
Jane B
Hi Lori I enjoy your blog and refer people to your site often. you make it look so easy. I do doodle before I begin quilting. I helps me get in the mood to finish my quilts.
Janie M
I quilt my own quilts. I can’t doodle I have to use stencils or just go by what is in my head.
Vivian Lewis
I dread thinking of how to quilt a block. Maybe doodling is the answer.
Laura
I have been doodling before I attempt to quilt. Your method really helps. Thank you!
Patty
I don’t do my own quilting on large quilts, I have it done. Small quilts I can do simple designs but don’t do anything intricate.
Debbie
I do a little doodling & I like to practice the quilting on small quilt sandwiches until I am comfortable doing the design. I took up quilting, not because of the piecing, but because I really like the looks of the quilting. I am hoping to do a whole cloth quilt . . . Sometime after a lot more practice.
Sandy K
I quilt my own, but so far have only done straight lines.
Trixie
I am just learning to trust myself with doodling. I love your designs and your website.
Diane
I love to doodle and I have done some Zentangling. Lots of fund.
June Neigum
Many times I go to bed and my mind keeps spinning. I have to get up and put it on paper so I won’t forget it in the morning and also get a good nites sleep. I also have made some doodle sheets to go over my squares and play with designs that way. Using a washable marker works well and I can use it over and over .
Rebecca Wilson
I am just learning to quilt on my new longarm and have begun to doodle. I didn’t think much of the technique before I actually started doing it but now I GET IT!! It really does develop muscle memory and help perfect designs before they get on the quilt.
Mimi
I just keep looking at the quilt to decide where the focal points should be. Then I doodle, study, read and watch videos until I can decide. Then I start all over for the background!
Debby Bainbridge
First I upload a picture of a portion of the quilt into the Brushes app. I doodle various designs on that. It is nice because you can “hide” and “unhide” designs. I will then doodle and test quilt aspects of the design before actually quilting the quilt. I almost always sleep on the design – it is amazing how many times I wake up in the morning with the answer in my head! I love to quilt and enjoy learning your patterns!
Judy Buzby
I often print a picture of the quilt in black and white and doodle on it to audition the patterns I want to use… and most of them are yours! Love them, Lori…
