“I LOVE HOME” BLOCK OF THE MONTH GIVEAWAY

Win! Win! Win! a fat quarter bundle of this gorgeous fabric by Sarah J. Maxwell!

It is time for our September “I Love Home” Block of the Month giveaway–and time to start quilting Block 2.

BLOCK TWO PATTERN

Pop over to Jacquelynne Steve’s Art of Home to download the pattern.

For my quilt, I changed the color way so I can add the house pattern in free motion quilting.

Jacquelynne Steeves, I Love Home, Block One

TIME TO DOODLE

The best time to begin planning the machine quilting is while you are piecing the blocks.  I like to draw the shapes to be quilted onto a note pad and doodle quilt ideas while I’m watching TV.

It’s a great way to try out ideas before stitching.

DOODLE IDEAS

I recommend you draw the basic house and then look at different motifs to decorate. (HINT:  There are a wide variety of motifs available in Free Motion Machine Quilting 1-2-3:  Easy Loops, Scallops, Hearts, Tulips, Dizzy Daisy, The Basic House, Trees…. Get a signed copy (along with a little surprise) from my Etsy shop HERESLEEP ON IT

It is best to doodle on several different days.  The first design is rarely the best design and by working over several sessions, you allow your subconscious to work on it as well!

WIN! WIN! WIN!

To win the fabric bundle, please leave a comment.  Tell me…Do YOU doodle before you machine quilt?  Has YOUR subconscious ever solved a problem or helped you with a design?  Do you do your own quilting?  Or just say “Hi!”

(To leave a comment, click on this comment symbol next to the blog post title…It looks like this:  (it may have a different number)

KEEPING BUSY

That is a lot of quilting to keep you busy!

Speaking of busy…I’m off to Madison, Wisconsin for The Quilt Expo!  Please join me for a little machine quilting.  I will be demo-ing (is that a word?)  a variety of machine quilting motifs each day at 11:30.  Hope to see YOU there!

Signed,

The Happy Home-Doodler,

Lori

  • I love to doodle but not for quilting purposes. I have done some stitch in the ditch but prefer to have a professional do the quilting!

  • Rebekah

I like to doodle on the blank backside of papers before they get recycled. I’m loving your book and Craftsy classes, Lori…and tnx for the heads up on their Labor Day freebies!

  • Sherril McGann

Not a doodler, just a beginner quilter here, mostly stitch in the ditch or grid-like quilting.

  • Cindy

I doodle in a spiral bound grid note book. That way I I can seen how it will divide up on the space provided on my mid arm. There is nothing like an exciting quilt design, only to find you don’t have room in your space to quilt. Do you have any information on any other way to solve this?

  • GRRANNYH

I doodle, I finger trace, I get out my quilting rulers and audition patterns, and then I try them out on a practice square before stitching on the quilt itself….and I learn a lot from this blog and watching classes on Craftsy.

  • Mildred Plaskett

I doodle, have your book and Craftsy classes – I’m ready to try.

  • Kaye Walker

I only quilt with a walking foot but want to learn free motion.

  • Brenda

I practice on a dry erase board until I’m comfortable with my design, then off to the longarm machine to do the quilting!

  • Bonnie Larson

I always doodle before fmq. Thanks for sharing.

  • Hi I must try doodling before quilting. I do struggle with what to quilt in blocks. This may help me.

  • Aileen Kline

Hi Lori. I doodle in my head and on paper, not as much as I should. I watch your Craftsy classes all the time. I have your book to reference as well.

  • Kaylene

I love your doodling… I doodle too, but haven’t been brave enough to try it on a finished piece yet. But, I am getting close! I have your book & read it over & over.

  • Katherine

I doodle some but then get impatient–I like the idea of starting earlier before I’m done piecing.

  • Deb Peterson

I doodle on a white board to practice patterns before trying on fabric, many times they are your patterns! I do all my own quilting, except for two projects and sometimes I hand quilt.

  • Alice

I know I should doodle more but I usually just jump right in. Would love to in the bundle of fabric

  • MaryAnn

I don’t doodle, but maybe I should start. Love your ideas.

  • Linda W

I usually take a picture of my finished top and draw out a design. I love your doodles. I’ll have to give it a try. Thanks, grinnie1961 at gmail dot com

  • Barbara

Not a doodler, but i think i should try. Love watching your work!

  • Joan Heard

I generally think about quilt design after I finish the piecing. Sleeping on it has helped me come up with solutions. I doodle to a limited extent. I should doodle more.
When are you coming to Canada to teach?

  • DeBrina Williams

Doodling is like recess…we should have time blocked off everyday for it forever.
My doodling is translating into some wild and funn FMQ!

    Doodling and recess!

  • cathy k

I am trying to doodle more before I quilt a project.

  • Erica Strocky

Good morning! I have drawn a few things out before sewing. I really need to make a book of drawn pitt blocks I want to try. I see & think up so many good ideas & they are all in my head, which i will probably forget. So anyway i should sm really do this more! Have a great day!

  • Sorry but I have a great quilter for my quilts, she does a wonderful job, but I lI love to piece my quilts, find a pattern, and search for just the right fabric! Love it all and would have a blast with the bundle of fabric you have to give-a-way!

  • marilyn mattfeld

I do my own quilting. I can’t call it mine unless I do the whole thing myself. I really love to free motion quilt but I hate to sandwich the quilt. That step is a real back breaker for me. I do doodle, but is use a disappearing ink pen on my quilt top. if somethings clicks I go over it in a wash out marker. If I find that I don’t really like it, I will change the color of my marker next time. I have woke up and find that all of sudden I have the plan for my quilt. No wonder I wake up tired sometimes. No rest for my brain.. PS. I love the give-away fabric. Beautiful!

  • Elizabeth V K

I doodle or practice drawing the designs I am considering – sometimes on paper, some on plastic and even a plexiglass piece I can lay on top of my and practice how the design will fit. Thanks for sharing.

  • Michele T

I doodle all the time… so many great ideas just happen that way!!!

  • April Hazelwood

I am new to FMQ so I have not doodled. I have solved delimmas by sleeping on it.

once in a blue moon my subconscious works for me: or, more often, it’s when I’m awake at night and can’t sleep! 🙂 Just signed up for your Divide and Conquer Class on Craftsy and I’m looking forward to inspiration and motivation to get some of my many quilts quilted!! That part always stumps and frightens me!! I’ve finished a few, but doing the quilting just seems to be a much harder step for me. But onward and upward!! 🙂 Hugs, h in Healdsburg

  • Flashinscissors

I’m not generally a doodler, but since I’ve been reading your blog I have been doodling before quilting. I am quite new to quilting and have found the doodling has definitely helped me get better quilting results!
    Thank you Lori.

I think of myself as a “scribbler” … Not structured enough to make sensible doodle designs. But I have started to keep a graph paper notebook in my tote bag so I can work on scale along with designs. I would never have done this without the ideas, instruction, and encouragement from you, Lori. Thank you.

  • Dale M

I love what you have doodled for that house on the hill.

  • Thanks for the craftsy tip. I had a fun day watching

  • Beth T.

No way. I am a very cautious fmq-er, and would be extremely uneasy trusting myself to doodle.

  • Hannah W

nope, not a doodler…perhaps I ought to try it out. Yours look fun:)

  • Paula Hedges

I am definitely a doodler! Sometimes I find myself doodling on the morning paper while trying to work a crosswood puzzle.

  • Glenda

I’m a very very new doodler & have only practiced! Nothing worth ruining a quilt for!!! Practice makes better Quilter’s!

  • Tweela Houtekamer

I doodle to practice before free motion quilting on my quilts, and to develop new ideas or motifs for quilting. But I hang my quilts on my long stair railing and stare at it off and on through the day until it suddenly comes to me and I KNOW how I want to quilt it.

  • I’ve never been much good at doodling but I’m trying to learn to use it more to help quilt.

  • Mama Higgins

I’m fairly new to quilting so I don’t really know what my style is yet, but I’m paying attention to people’s advice!

  • I’ve only quilted one quilt so don’t really have a regular method yet. I have very much enjoyed reading many of your tutorials!

  • Leslie in MN

I’ll be leaving for Quilt Expo on Wed. I’m signed up for your lecture on Saturday, I think. It will feel very strange without Nancy Zieman there. I feel so bad about her situation. I’m sure everyone thinks of her as a friend.

  • Barbara Bischof

I’m enjoying learning to machine quilt, I’ve been a doodler all my lifebut never thought of applying it to quilting! I followed a suggestion of yours and purchased Diane Gaudynski -Guide to Machine Quilting. And i’m following your DIY tips and blogs. Thank you! Enjoyed your Craftsy lesson

  • Chris

I doodle but I don’t know how much good it does. I’m just not that good. Maybe someday I will be. Love your work.

  • Vicki

    Love your design!

  • Camille

I try to practice doodling before stitching but sometimes wanting to start ASAP interferes.

  • Mary D'Amico

I’ve never doodled, but I plan to start–I’ve always thought I couldn’t do it.

  • I have yet to wilt my own quilt but I ha e tried a long arm and on the practice my mind did take over and I doodled the end of the practice be free quilting from the front and I plan on trying to quilt my first quilt soon

  • Susan

I think doodling helps me FMQ. I m a better pieces than quilter- all those flimsiest tell a story. Hoping to have a free room soon so I can leave my big machine set up for FMQ. I think that I can do it with consistent practice. I certainly have taken enough classes and lessons!!

  • Pat V

I agree that the subconscious works on problems for us. I often wake up knowing how to handle a sewing challenge, or a personal interaction, or what I had thought was a difficult situation. It just becomes clear when I’ve given myself some time to let my brain do its job.

  • Sheryl

I’m a jump right in with both feet and quilt away. So far I haven’t been disappointed with the results–keeping my fingers crossed!
