“I LOVE HOME” BLOCK OF THE MONTH GIVEAWAY
Win! Win! Win! a fat quarter bundle of this gorgeous fabric by Sarah J. Maxwell!
It is time for our September “I Love Home” Block of the Month giveaway–and time to start quilting Block 2.
BLOCK TWO PATTERN
Pop over to Jacquelynne Steve’s Art of Home to download the pattern.
For my quilt, I changed the color way so I can add the house pattern in free motion quilting.
TIME TO DOODLE
The best time to begin planning the machine quilting is while you are piecing the blocks. I like to draw the shapes to be quilted onto a note pad and doodle quilt ideas while I’m watching TV.
It’s a great way to try out ideas before stitching.
DOODLE IDEAS
I recommend you draw the basic house and then look at different motifs to decorate. (HINT: There are a wide variety of motifs available in Free Motion Machine Quilting 1-2-3: Easy Loops, Scallops, Hearts, Tulips, Dizzy Daisy, The Basic House, Trees…. Get a signed copy (along with a little surprise) from my Etsy shop HERESLEEP ON IT
It is best to doodle on several different days. The first design is rarely the best design and by working over several sessions, you allow your subconscious to work on it as well!
WIN! WIN! WIN!
To win the fabric bundle, please leave a comment. Tell me…Do YOU doodle before you machine quilt? Has YOUR subconscious ever solved a problem or helped you with a design? Do you do your own quilting? Or just say “Hi!”
(To leave a comment, click on this comment symbol next to the blog post title…It looks like this: (it may have a different number)

KEEPING BUSY
That is a lot of quilting to keep you busy!
Speaking of busy…I’m off to Madison, Wisconsin for The Quilt Expo! Please join me for a little machine quilting. I will be demo-ing (is that a word?) a variety of machine quilting motifs each day at 11:30. Hope to see YOU there!

Reading your blog has inspired and motivated me to set a goal to doodle on a daily basis

Music to my ears!
Carol
I love your designs and they help me doodle and discover designs of my own. I will draw out a block or two and then make a bunch of copies of the drawn block and try doodling many different designs in the blocks until I find a design that I am happy with.
Barbara Kaup
I have been reading about some of your quilting designs for free motion quilting and want to get brave enough to try them–I guess nothing ventured, nothing gained!

I doodle all the time. I keep a clipboard with paper and pencil on each floor of our 3-story home. Once a week I add them to a 3-ring binder with dividers for different categories. When I get stuck while working on a piece, I page thru my binder. It’s amazing how I get inspired by my random drawings.
Really enjoy your blog! And just watched your segments on Sewing with Nancy. It was nice to “meet” you!
Kathlyn
My doodles are a bit wobbly when I quilt, so I guess that’s a matter of practice to keep stitch length consistent sice my machine doesn’t have a stitch regulator.
Jean Hope
Doodling doesn’t come easy to me, I love your doodles.
Rita Scott
I don’t doodle but know I should. I have been doing my own quilting and I’m just beginning to work outside the box, (whatever that means). Just having fun with it.
Liz Horgan
I usually don’t doodle, sometimes if I’m thinking about it while sitting on the couch, I’ll doodle on the cushion!
debbierhodes
I have doodle on paper Never on a quilt. Need to start.
Mania
Very rarely I draw before the cover, but sometimes I have to check the correct passage of my needle through the patch pattern,. I mostly use FMQ, even for straight lines. I do not like walking foot.
Janet Sabol
I don’t usually doodle, but like to have a pattern figured out before quilting which is generally why I have so much to quilt! I usually go on to another project because piecing is more fun for me!

Still in ditch in stitch but ready to go further

No time like the present!

Just learning to free motion quilt. I will needs lots of practice but love learning something new. Thanks for sharing. Beautiful work.
Karen L.
I have not started doodling yet but I did buy a little plain paper notebook to start doing so. I can really see how it would help produce some muscle memory before starting on the actual quilt. Much better idea than quilting without doodling then having to use the seam ripper, don’t you think?
Michele Piper
I watched your classes and always doodle to see if my brain gets it before trying it out on machine love your tutorials!!!
Ola Norman
I’m just learning to machine quilt.
Peggy
Have taken the summer off from quilting to work on my fences and to work with and take my 4H members to county then state fairs showing llamas and alpacas from my rescue farm. Several of my 4Hers also quilt.
Marta
Oh, Peggy. I am so curious about alpacas. Is there a website where I could ask you questions? I wear alpaca socks I bought in TN at a craft show a few years ago, The heels have holes now and I have no alpaca yarn to darn them with either. My sewing machine doesn’t mind tho!

Hi there! I do draw things out first to get an idea of how it will look plus I enjoy drawing anyway. Sewing and quilting are my obsessions though!! So fun!!! Have a great day!!
Liz Horgan
I doodle a little bit–sometime with my finger on the couch cushion when an idea comes into my head!
Cynthia G Fox
Wow! Something new to think about — always something new.
Sally Dixon
I haven’t done any free motion machine quilting but would love to learn!
Sue H
I mostly doodle to see if I can get a design to flow without back-tracking and using only a single pass. Love your quilting ideas. Thank you for all you give to us!
Sherri Hines
Hi! I have done some hand quilting and a bit of free-motion quilting but never thought of doodlling as a prep for quilting.

It is essential!
Denise Smith
I’m just a beginner quilter so don’t know all the “tricks” of the trade yet, like doodling! It’s certainly worth a try to see how I like it.
Wanda Rains
I never have doodled before but you’ve given me a great idea. Thanks
pqguild
I’m new to FM and realized quickly that I needed something – namely to doodle. I get hung-up with perfection. Then, I slow down and breathe trying to remember your words of wisdom, “Practice, practice, and practice.”
Dawn F.
I doodle just a little bit just to get the pattern in my head, but usually I make a practice quilt sandwich and do it that way.
Lori Warnock
I do my own quilting and sometimes I will doodle, but not much.
Pam P
I’ve just started to experiment with FMQ and am finding doodling very helpful. Haven’t done a whole quilt yet. Thanks for your encouragement to get into this!

I just started doodling and found it very helpful

It always works!

Hi, from TX! Yes, I have quilted my own quilts. One was entirely by hand but I never drew out my own pattern. I have a hunting quilt now that I’m half hand sewing/machine sewing right now.
RondaHolt
Love your blog! You have made me a doodler! I draw on anything, anywhere except while on a tractor with auto steer. The fields are too rough for good results!
Pam S
I usually doodle before quilting although I need more practice in my doodling just like I do in my quilting. Thanks for the suggestions in your post!
Sue LD
Hi. I am a newbie so I have not doodled before quilting.
Cheryl Gebhart
I don’t always doodle before quilting – it depends on whether it’s a new pattern for me or not. If it’s a new pattern, I usually doodle it first – or at the very least, trace over lines with my finger, then try quilting on a sample.

I constantly doodle. I have mastered quilting feathers only by the almost non-stop doodling of thing ( there are many other motifs I have not mastered though). Anyone who doesn’t believe in muscle memory should try doodling as it really makes a real difference in the quality of one’s quilting. I fell in my studio and broke my leg and dislocated my foot 2 weeks ago—doodling is about all I can do for the next few weeks. But it will pay off in the long run.
Anita Skjellanger
I don’t usually doodle before I quilt, but I can see the advantages!
Kelly
Oh my gosh…I doodle all the time. One quilt I had on my machine for a few days and a design just wasn’t coming to me! I woke up in the middle of the night. I had dreamed the PERFECT design!
Kathryn
I like your fmq doodling idea, I haven’t done that but now I just might!
Kay Helton
I’m new to quilting. So far stitch in the ditch is all I have done. I’m working up to FMQ.
Jean Condon
Doodling does not come easy to me, I like your doodles
Elizabeth Kellough
I am a doodler, but for designing blocks. I have not quite mastered the art of machine quilting, so I either stitch in the ditch or do basic stitching within the design of the block.
Angela Bowling
I am not a doodler and I only do stitch in the ditch quilting. I am a very new quilter so I haven’t really gotten into the quilting part yet. I like to do small quilts.
Marilyn
I do not doodle . Thank you for the giveaway.
Marilyn
Bev Gunn
A doodler i am NOT! Can’t even draw anything so good thing I know how to embroidery!
nancyangerer
I haven’t learned to FMQ yet, but it is on my bucket list. So far I have mostly done straight line quilting. I have made 2 t-shirt quilt that I did some creative quilting on using the walking foot. On those quilts I drew the quilting design right on the t-shirts using a water soluble pen.
Brenda
I mostly do straight line quilting using my walking foot. I have too many problems with my hands to do very much free motion quilting.
Jane
I’ve been watching your Craftsy classes – so I’m still mostly straight line quilting but am now doodling on paper – when I get a bit better I’m going to try it with thread 🙂
Suzi L.
i actually doodle on everything, back of menus, sales receipts, edges of newpapers..
whenever the idea strikes…makes for very messy accumulations. need to coral
them all into a notebook.
