How to Machine Quilt a Climbing Vine Motif

How to Quilt a Vine Motif, Lori KennedyGood Morning, Quilters!

I’m in denial…Heavy snow again!  ***sigh***

via Kare 11

Back to my sewing room to stitch a garden!

Let’s quilt a climbing vine. Imagine the sun is shining and that vine is climbing all the way to my second story sewing room window.  There’s a Robin singing a happy tune:  “Whenever that red, red robin comes bob-bob-bobbing along…”

Now we’re in the right frame of mind!

Begin by drawing three vertical parallel lines, equidistant apart.

Begin stitching to the left of centerline. Curl to the right sideline and around the centerline.

Stitch back on the previous line of stitching approximately 3/4 of the curl. (The stitching is shown offset for demo only.)

Begin the next curl.  Stitch to the left side line and curl in around the centerline. (The key to remember:  always curl in toward the center.)

Stitch on the previous line of stitching, 3/4 of the curl.  Stitch just above the adjacent curl, to the right side line and curl into the center.

The Climbing Vine looks great both vertically and horizontally!

And it looks great paired with a straight line motif like The Bow Tie.

    I love this design!

I made a queen size bear paw quilt for my husband a need to machine quilt it. My hands can no longer do hand quilting. I would appreciate recommendations on what quilting design (s) to use.

  • Lori, what a lovely design, just flows so nice. Thank you.

This is amazing and fairly simple, I really like this design. I think I now have a new favorite .. is that possible? Thank you …

What a pretty vine motif! Love this one.
No robins here. I live 100 miles east of you in the woods. There must be at least 2 feet of snow in my front yard. Tomorrow I am heading to Florida for a week. Yay!!

  • Sheri Lewis

Thank you so much. You make it look so easy.

  • Ruth Bertaccini

What perfect timing, Lori! Think this would look beautiful in the sashing areas of my latest quilt that’s getting an appliqued vine/motif on the outer borders! Thank you!

  • Ann Rapice

I hope you will be coming out with another book of the pictorial designs. I love the step by step instructions and photos. Breaking it down in this way makes it less intimidating.

Your work is always so beautiful! And your directions are clear and easy to follow! I’m learning so much!

  • Judy Chastain

I love that! It’s so graceful. I can already think how I can use that motif. You’re the greatest, Lori!

  • GrrannyH

    Very nice!

I really enjoy following your examples. I’m learning. The windows are
open in sunny Florida and the birds are singing. Trees are blooming, lots of pollen in the air. Spring has sprung here!

I have a question. I am new to quilting and I made a moose in a 4 pane window. I was short on a bit of background material and I put in a little bit to finish it out. I have a straight line where I patched it in. What can I do to cover it up? In this little window area are trees, deer and fish with a little lake. In the other window is a tree and part of the lake, the bottom windows are tree and moose with pebbles. Of course my eye always lands on that straight stitch line.

Could you appliqué a few fish on top of the line?

I think this would look great on the wedding quilt I’m getting ready to quilt. Thank you

  • Mary Lou

Thank you for another elegant beautiful motif! I’m guessing it’ll be stunning in various sizes…headed up to me sewing nook in cool but sunny OK!

  • Kathy

    Very pretty! Thank you Lori!

  • Anne Dirks

It’s a warm, sunny day in Alabama with birds singing and our guineas making noise and chasing each other around the yard.

  • Gorgeous motif. Very elegant indeed.

We had a whole yard full of robins yesterday! What a beautiful harbinger of Spring. They won’t stay long as they are headed north from here (Houston). I’ve been haunting my sewing room lately, escaping from grey skies and seemingly constant rain. Thanks for the new motif, Lori. It is elegant.

Greetings from “Cheesehead” country and facing the same storm you did. At least this will force me inside to sew. Enjoying all your tutorials

Hello Lori, Thank you for sharing all your ideas. I will be following your blog. I look out to the snowy Utah mountains from my sewing room. Hugs. Laura in Farmington, Utah

We’ve had early warm weather in Georgia, but freezing temps are expected as overnight lows later this week. I love this design, and I am determined to master backtracking with my long arm, so I will be practicing this motif. Thank you!

  • Suzanne G.

This is elegant, delicate and perfect for a border. You are so creative and always come up with such beautiful designs! I have a baby quilt top that I’ll be quilting soon, and I just might try it.

It’s cold here in Eastern PA as well and we’ve got 6 to 12 inches of snow coming our way that I think is from the same system that hit you. But I’m a winter girl and rarely tire of it because I’m extremely heat-intolerant. Summer is rather difficult for me.

My sewing room is my happy place. I have my big, computerized machine and my vintage Kenmore “catty-corner” (is that how you say it?) to one another, each under a window where I can look out at the falling snow and the pair of cardinals that occasionally come by. It’s cozy, comfortable and I always have company – any combination of 3 cats and one very large affectionate dog. Heaven!

Here in Sioux City, Iowa, we also have a bit of snow and wind. It’s enough to keep me home and in my sewing room. We did have a sole male robin last weekend. He arrived just before a warm stretch that melted most of the snow on the lawn. He looked happy as he hopped along searching for whatever he could find in the open grass! They’ll be back.

  • DebbieW

    Great motif for borders.

  • Oh that is nice! Always looking for an easy border or sashing motif!
Weather here Warmer than I think it should be for March. I’m in Cincinnati and the temps should hit 56 today. Flowers are poking out and a few blooming here and there.

  • Sally MB

I will be quilting between shoveling! I love this motif and will practice, practice, practice.

  • Becky Shaffer

    Lovely!

  • Kelly Ashton

This is a really lovely design!!! ????

  • Donna Belisle

Fun following with my mouse, now to try it on some fabric.

  • Kaylene

Very pretty and I agree with Kerry, it looks elegant.
