How to Free Motion Quilt an Egg in a Basket

April 7, 2020
Good Morning, Quilters!

Today, we are going to learn how to free motion quilt an egg in a basket!  It’s adorable–especially when you use variegated thread!

But first….some fun news!

Yesterday, I was interviewed via Skype by Alex Anderson of The Quilt Show. We chatted about quarantine quilting, our LKQ community, UFOs and of course–free motion quilting.  The short interview will be included in their newsletter on Friday. Be sure to check your inbox and do me a favor–flood The Quilt Show with comments! LOLOL

The Egg in the Basket Motif

Today’s tutorial is sponsored by BERNINA’s We All Sew blog.  The step-by-step tutorial can be found here along with a short video.

I had a hard time creating nice ovals, so I cut a stencil out of paper and traced that before stitching.  I do as little marking as possible, but sometimes it is necessary to get the best results.  However, you may find you don’t need the stencil after doodling for a while.

Thread

I used Sulky 30wt cotton Blendables  to machine quilt the egg and the flowers in this spring quilt.

To create the subtle background design, I used a yellow variegated thread.

The Baby Chick Motif

The Egg in the Basket motif would look great with last spring’s Baby Chick pattern–also from We All Sew!

Call Your BERNINA Dealer

With most of us “safer at home”, many sewing machine stores are still offering sales.  BERNINA has a Spring Sale including very favorable financing deals.  If you are considering a new machine, this is a great time to jump in by calling your dealer.

I LOVE my BERNINA 770QE and my BERNINA Q20 sit down long arm!

Though…I’m seriously considering taking the plunge and buying the Q24 on the long arm frame!!!!  Eeek–exciting but can I learn a new way of stitching?!

Stay Home, Make Quilts

Hope YOU are well–and practicing free motion quilting and finishing UFOs?

How will YOU make Easter and Passover special this year?

Are YOU quilting every day?

We’d LOVE to hear!

Hippity-hoppity,

Lori

The eggs are so cute and love the little flowers. But that chickie in cracked open egg stole my heart !! Still working on hand done commission quilt. When it is done, (YES!) I will
be free to make some masks and then chickie’s no matter what month it is.

Hello from Australia. I love my Q20. At my age decided it was too late to go from that to a standup machine and learn the new skills. I havent been sorry for my choice and quilt every day. It is such an individual choice only you can make it. Enjoy your Easter eggs.

  • I do like the free arm sit down models however that you currently have. If I had one, I would be hard pressed to give it up!

  • When I was working at a quilt store I learned to free motion in a long arm. I is standing so a little hard on my back but much easier on my shoulders. Then my husband passed and I moved away from any quilt store where I could rent a machine so I focused on FMQ on my domestic. Although I have to take breaks I actually like the domestic better. I can go in any direction on quilt that I want to, back track etc. On a long arm frame you work in the area that is open and then roll the quil. Although you can leave some of where you have quilted open so it can be continuous quilting,, I feel I just did not have the freedom on the long arm the U have with my machine. I did upgrade machine to an 11″ throat space and that made a difference. Although I kind of like the Q zone hoop frame, I am not terribly tempted to long arm after really considering it

Are you able to share what brand of machine has an 11 inch throat? Thanks..

Wow, I really love your work! This is one of my favorites!

  • Lori, you are such a darling quilter and friend. Thank you for your help and encouragement in our quilting journey. This is such a darling motif.
I have had a quilt all sandwiched and ready for more than a week, but I put it on hold to make 50 masks to donate. Plus a couple of fancy-pants masks for my nurse daughter with a headband to keep the elastic from bothering her ears.
Now I can move on, since they’re in the mail.
For Passover and Easter, I am joining a world-wide fast on Good Friday. I invite all my friends to join. What better way to show love to our Heavenly Father, and His beloved Son?
    Happy Easter Week.

    I love this design!!
I have been quilting on my BERNINA’s 780. However, I just got a q24! I’m practicing every day, doodling first and then stitching!!

Lori, you are Amazing – I love your work!!!!

I have a sit down quilting machine, which is fine for smaller quilts. But for the really big quilts, I rent time on my LQS’s Q24. I didn’t find it difficult to transition from one to the other. When you are doodling, you are basically moving the “machine” (pen), over your paper, so it some ways the long arm is easier.

Where can I find the background/wall paper as a quilt motif? Love it!
