How to Doodle a Whimsical Sheep

April 9, 2020
Good Morning, Quilters and Doodlers!

Today, we are going to learn how to doodle a whimsical sheep.  The sheep’s body is the perfect place to practice  machine quilting motifs!

And just in time for spring!  (Spring?!? It snowed in Minnesota last week!)

The Whimsical Sheep Doodle

Start with simple shapes to create the head like a squared off triangle.  Add leaf shape ears.  You can add simple round eyes or try spoke like eyes.  Stars or other shapes would also work well.

Simple Body Shapes

Then add a large shape to create the body.  Try adding the body in different positions–off to the right and centered, for example to create a variety of sheep poses.

Add skinny legs.

Choose a Few Simple Motifs

For inspiration, check out Sheep 101.

Simple Loops

Spirals

Pebbling

Scallops

A White Sheep

The body of the sheep provides a blank slate to fill.  See how many different breeds you can create!

Don’t Stop with One!

Try a variety of pens and markers to create different line weights and patterns.

Once you get started, I’m sure you’ll be counting sheep all night!

Lori, Get out of the studio for a breath of fresh air… It does wonders for the soul….been in house in 5th week now..As your elder, I get to give unsolicited advice to those I love! I have insisted on taking my notebook to the deck outside and at least be in outdoor air. House is stuffy with that TV news all the time.. I am finishing a commission quilt in the morning with photos and delivery.. Set it in doorway and run! Teasing..we have masks, gloves etc..Now I can do all the follow up FM after the doodling.. New quilt coming up
with 6 inch white squares.. perfect for some sheeps…lambs? …but what color thread?

Indeed! Fresh air is always a great idea! Fortunately, Minnesota has many beautiful trails! Thank you for your wise advice, Marta!

The first and last example look like a wolf in sheeps clothing, ha, ha. But then in between…the most endearing sheep come out to play…to sweet!

My mom was a sheep farmer for years, and she still loves sheep things, so I’ll be using this for a gift for her! Thanks, Lori!

I love “sheeps” Yours are really cute. Now that I have a mob of grandbabies, I should make some sheep.
Thank you Lori for always encouraging with fun ideas

What is it about sheep that make them such fun to play with? The wooliness I guess.i love you’re various curly whirlies

  • Having fun with these doodles. My son who is an artist saw what I was playing with and told me to google ‘one line art’. Gave me even more inspiration.

The sheep are adorable! As soon as I finish my coffee I have to try it.
