In 2015 I was in France on a tour which included a full day guided visit to the D -Day Beaches in Normandy. Last year I was in Belgium and my tour included WW 1 sites, including Flanders Fields. All I could think of was the thousands of mothers who had lost their sons. It was heartwrenching to think we’ve learned nothing from the horrors of those two wars. Our current leaders in the US pay lip service to our veterans, but so few of them have served in the military and have no clue about what a sacrifice that involves, nor do they adequately provide for veterans’ needs.

I love Van Gogh. I have a copy of one of his painting hanging in our bedroom. Thank you for the beautiful photos.

“Coquelicot”, such a pretty name for a poppy.

Thanks, so important to remember not to just have another holiday. Hadn’t read the Flanders fields poem in a long time. Thanks, too, for the shared French quilt and the other photos she had.

  • Thanks for sharing this beauty

  • My dream project is to recreate a Monet or Renoir as a fabric collage! It is doable.

  • I love Monet! Thanks for sharing!

I am old enough to really remember the Flanders Field and the rows of crosses, imprinted in my memory bank. Then there were also the old ladies who sold poppies every memorial day on the streets of my hometown. Do they still sell poppies today?

I do know you can buy them as seeds, I hope to put some out this spring if mine make it through the winter.

Poppies are sold in Canada leading up to Remembrance Day.

    • Hi, in 1914, I made a hommage quilt for the “poilu”, you can read this story on my blog, here : http://minipatch.canalblog.com/archives/2017/04/07/35141858.html

Brigitte, your quilt is a beautiful work of art and a loving tribute. I wish I could have read your blog, but I don’t speak or read French. However, I loved seeing the photos, and your quilt speaks a universal language.

      • je voulais dire 2014 !!! 🙂

In Flanders Field – Poem by John McCrae

    Autoplay next video
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
    In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
    In Flanders fields.
    John McCrae

I hope this is not to long.

Brenda, I remember having to memorize this poem when I was in grade school. I have always loved it and I am always moved by it. When I was little, my Dad would buy a paper poppy for me as a symbol of remembrance, and I would wear it on my jacket. This poem will never be too long. Thanks for posting it. If you hadn’t posted it, I would have. ❤️

Remember this poem so well. We memorized it in grade school in preparation for Remembrance Day

  • Love Monet. Have that one hanging on my wall. Thanks for showing the Van Gogh version. Just like quilts no two alike.

  • Betty Monroe

I love these paintings. Thanks for posting.
