Lori Kennedy, Machine Quilting, I Love Home, Jacquelynne Steves

Good Morning, Quilters!

It’s a busy week here at The Inbox Jaunt!  Tomorrow my new Craftsy video, Creating a Quilting Plan:  Approaches for Any Quilt is released!  Be sure to check in tomorrow for all the details!!!!

And today we have a giveaway!

I LOVE HOME BLOCK OF THE MONTH

Block 4 is available HERE  from Jacquelynne Steves

Block Four is the final block.  Next month we add borders and finishing touches!

While you are stitching the blocks, it is helpful to start planning  how you will quilt different areas of the quilt.  Each area of the quilt  will need it’s own “quilting plan” including batting, thread and motifs.

Machine Quilting, Lori KennedyWHICH MOTIFS TO CHOOSE?!

There are so many possible motifs to quilt, we need to narrow the focus.

One way to choose motifs is to stick to a theme.

For this quilt, I looked for motifs that fit our I Love Home theme like hearts and houses.

The Sweetheart Border and Row Houses are perfect for the borders.  Find the Sweetheart Border HERE and the Row of Houses HERE

Both motifs can also be found in my book, Free Motion Machine Quilting 1-2-3 HERE on Etsy  (Personalized, signed copies make great gifts!)

To test your motifs, use a vinyl sheet and a wet erase marker.

Read HERE for more tips on this method.

I seem to get these ideas in my head on how I want my Quilting to look like but it just doesn’t translate down to my hands. My stitches aren’t consistent and once in a while they get jerky.

  • Planning time to get started.

  • Lori Smanski

your block is very pretty. I think my biggest challenge most of the time is picking out the perfect fabrics. there are just way too many that go so nicely together. lol

  • Sharon Treece

My hardest part is planning the quilting design layout.

  • Tonni

Making that first quilt is my greatest challenge. I read about quilting, think about it, buy the material…and then make pot holders…sigh.

  • Deb Frazier

My biggest quilt challenge is finding time to actually piece and quilt the many projects I have purchased over the last few years.

  • Janice Scandrett

My biggest hurdle in machine quilting is figuring out what design pattern to use and can I do that design pattern. Your quilting tutorials have helped so much. On my last quilt I used a modified version of squiggly sun – it came out great. My next quilt will have trains and race cars, also from your tutorials. The more quilts I do, the easier the designing seems to be!

  • Betty Domal

I think my biggest challenge is just getting around to cutting out the pieces for the blocks,

  • Lisa Marie

My challenge is knowing when to say “good enough”. I tend to be a bit OCD about matching points, choosing just the right fabrics, etc.

  • Carolyn S

My biggest challenge is what to quilt in the different areas, followed by tension and sometimes speed.

  • Leslie Goldsberry

FMQ is challenging for me. I have difficulty with speed and tension. I think practice would help. ????

  • Denise P

I would color selection, and then color arrangement is my biggest challenge.

  • Carla C

My biggest quilting challenge is cutting fabrics the correct measurements ad cutting it straight without making any mistakes.

  • cheri

already signed up for your new class, since i find that my main issue is planning out what to quilt on the quilt tops that i have accumulated.

  • Sheila Susen

My “current” biggest challenge is learning to quilt as you go. I’ve started a tee shirt quilt for my youngest son (age 48!) who has collected decades of rock concert tee shirts that he wants transformed into a king-sized quilt. No bigee right? But wait: he wants the fronts of the shirts aligned with their backs. I’ve squared off the shirts, pressed the fusible to them to prevent stretching, and even have them paired off in preparation. I have black fabric with musical notes scattered throughout to use as sashing/binding. This is a real challenge that I’m intimidated by.

Lately my biggest challenge has been picking the colors for the quilt. I’ll pick a focus print and halfway through I’ll fall in love with another print which may or may not go with the first and may become the new color for the quilt. It’s driving me crazy!! Thanks.

  • Angela J Short

One of my biggest challenges so far is choosing the colors for my quilt. The heart motifs are super cute! angielovesgary2 atgmail dotcom

  • Laura

My biggest quilting challenge has always been and still remains deciding on a quilting design. Laurie your doodle quilting classes have helped immensely! I have also been doing some ruler classes. I haven’t decided yet whether I could tackle ruler work on a bigger quilt as I quilt on a domestic machine. Time and practice will tell.

  • Judy Chastain

My biggest challenge is choosing a motif. I just finished a scrappy quilt and did something different in each block. It was like practicing on a whole bunch of quilt sandwiches!

  • Jennifer P

My biggest challenge is picking a fabric with too big of a design and how to best work with that fabric in a quilt pattern.

  • Gay Agan

My biggest challenge is deciding on the quilting motif for each section of the quilt.

  • Ava Troxler

My biggest challenge is sandwiching the quilt. There isn’t enough space in my home, that allows for my back limitations , for angthing larger than a small piece.

  • My biggest challenge is quilting a large quilt. I love them, though, and I want to do everything myself. I use my walking foot and manage to get them done. I cannot do FMQ. Thank you, peterstankovich@comcast.net

  • quilterpt

Well congratulations on launching your latest Craftsy class. That’s exciting! My greatest quilting challenge is getting the tension right. I always seem to have dots of my bobbin thread showing on top.

  • My biggest challenge is picking colors for my quilting projects.

  • nancyangerer

I think my biggest problems are fear and time. Right now I am too busy to take the time to learn to FMQ, but fear of it is a big factor also.

  • Sarah Eheart

My biggest challenge is trying to decide which of the free motion stitches to use in most of the smaller quilts that I make. I have taken free motion classes from various well known teachers but they never add a section at the end to let us try to plan quilting on a small sample and give us feedback on if we are on the the right track with this specific quilt. A little critique would certainly be appreciated.

  • Barbara Daniel

i like to make realistic pictorial landscape quilts. For me the hard part is knowing the quilting lines to add to give it more realism, texture on trees and mountains, sky, and of course adding texture to the ground that looks like weeds etc. I really wish someone taught this form of quilting. I guess there aren’t enough people that want a class like this for a class at a show but Craftsy would be a perfect place for this. I talked to Nancy Prince about it and she teaches it occasionally she said.

  • Pat V

Planning the quilting is always my biggest issue. Where to start? What design to use? How much is enough? Guess I’ll be checking out your new class.

  • Pamela Richards

My biggest challenge so far, was doing a t-shirt quilt for a lady that wanted input on what colors, which shirts, what the lay out would be — it was a real pain to me doing my own thing. I love being able to pick out the colors for the quilt.

  • Linda Davidson

My biggest hindrance is still time–time to practice motifs. Yours are beautiful! I am getting a better handle on choosing motifs. I’ve learned a lot through a variety of blogs and Craftsy classes. Thank you so much for all you do to educate us!

  • My biggest problem is trying to keep things simple and do-able in a reasonable time. I tend to get really complex and involved in overdoing. By the time it is done I don’t like it any more.

  • Mildred Plaskett

My biggest challenge is learning to machine quilt. I’m working on it!

  • KellyW

Thank you Olfa and Lori for this neat give-away. My biggest challenge is getting over the nervousness of STARTING to machine quilt. I’m always afraid that the quilting won’t look as good as I want it to and I’m hesitant to start the machine quilting. Once I get going it’s fine. It’s just that first hurdle!!

  • Joyce Calhoun

My biggest challenge is planning how to quilt the project.

  • Ellen McKinley

My challenge is getting time to practice doodling and machine quilting. It is such a hassle to change my setup back and forth between quilting and piecing that I have avoided it. I just bought a second machine so I can have one dedicated to quilting!

  • My biggest challenge is finding the time in the day. I am thinking retirement is my solution!! :o)

  • Wendy Johnston

Deciding on a design is my biggest challenge when I’m ready to quilt.

  • Rhonda W.

My biggest challenge is planning what to quilt.

  • I hate doing the binding! I my corners never seem to look as good as the examples; definitely my biggest quilting challenge!

  • Sally Dixon

Planning the quilting is my biggest challenge. Thanks for your ideas.

  • Joyce

Starting to many challenges…. love the challenge. Second is buying all the pretty fabrics… Don’t have room for any more. But I love to quilt.

  • Reba Walker

My biggest challenge is choosing the right colors. I want my quilts to have that POP of color that really makes it appealing to the eye.

  • Renita Ball

I’m challenged by color. I want to use my stash but I’m always missing something then things just don’t always look good.

  • Brenda W

It is definitely choosing the motifs that is most challenging. I always have to look through many books and the pictures/ pages I have seen and saved to come up with ideas.

  • Chris

Always deciding what to quilt, so hard to choose.

  • Chris R

My challenge is finding time to practice. I really can’t doodle , so I make sandwiches to practice on…but finding the time!

  • Terry

My biggest challenge is deciding on quilt motifs. I’m never sure what will look good in a particular space….

  • suzanprincess

My biggest challenge is finding the space to work in–too much stuff!
