Lori Kennedy, Machine Quilting, I Love Home, Jacquelynne Steves

Good Morning, Quilters!

It’s a busy week here at The Inbox Jaunt!  Tomorrow my new Craftsy video, Creating a Quilting Plan:  Approaches for Any Quilt is released!  Be sure to check in tomorrow for all the details!!!!

And today we have a giveaway!

I LOVE HOME BLOCK OF THE MONTH

Block 4 is available HERE  from Jacquelynne Steves

Block Four is the final block.  Next month we add borders and finishing touches!

While you are stitching the blocks, it is helpful to start planning  how you will quilt different areas of the quilt.  Each area of the quilt  will need it’s own “quilting plan” including batting, thread and motifs.

Machine Quilting, Lori KennedyWHICH MOTIFS TO CHOOSE?!

There are so many possible motifs to quilt, we need to narrow the focus.

One way to choose motifs is to stick to a theme.

For this quilt, I looked for motifs that fit our I Love Home theme like hearts and houses.

The Sweetheart Border and Row Houses are perfect for the borders.  Find the Sweetheart Border HERE and the Row of Houses HERE

Both motifs can also be found in my book, Free Motion Machine Quilting 1-2-3 HERE on Etsy  (Personalized, signed copies make great gifts!)

To test your motifs, use a vinyl sheet and a wet erase marker.

Read HERE for more tips on this method.

Your work is beautiful! I have 2 big quilting challenges: basting (my house doesn’t have a large enough open floor space for anything lap-sized or larger) and I have a book with quilting motifs to use as stencils but I always have a horrible time re-sizing the motifs to fit on my quilt right.

  • The actual quilting is the hardest for me. I have a limited sewing space so quilting a big top is challenging.

  • annthompson51

    Choosing the fabrics.

  • Chiska

The quilting is my biggest challenge. Figuring out what and how to quilt it is the toughest thing for me.

  • Judy Strigel

My biggest problem is picking out the material that I think will look great in the pattern.

  • Nancy

I chose to add photos to the quilt I am currently working on. It’s been the most challenging thing I’ve done on a quilt and will probably never do again!

  • Sandy Worley

Free motion quilting is my biggest challenge in completing my projects. I will keep at the practice efforts, hoping one day to reach success. Your work is so beautiful & encourages my efforts. Thank you

  • Debra

My biggest challenge is to make time to learn free motion quilting. I prefer to handquilt but using a machine is so much faster. One day… I look forward to reading more on your blog. 🙂

  • Denise Nash

I’m dealing with my biggest challenge right now! Today! I’m getting ready to quilt our Modern Quilt Guild entry for QuiltCon, and am staring at all that negative space, looking for a theme I can carry through. Whew! it’s stressful.

  • My biggest quilting challenge is deciding how I want to quilt my quilt. I believe I tend to over think it. I always want to make it more complicated than it needs to be. I feel that if I just relaxed a bit the quilt design will come to me.

  • Rosanna Rhinehart

My biggest challenge is picking a quilting motif. I have started quilting since I retired and have completed two of Jacquelynne Steve’s designs. I hand quilted both. Maybe I will get brave enough to try free motion machine quilting on the next one.

  • Kaye Walker

My biggest challenge is choosing fabric. I will mull over that forever, picking and dismissing.

  • Donna Stellway

I think my biggest challenge is choosing the right fabrics for the pattern and the person I’m making a quilt for. It all has to fit the personality of who it’s going to.

  • Karin

My biggest problem is finding time!

  • My biggest problem is with deciding on what fabrics to use!

  • Becky Olson

I have a hard time choosing fabrics and threads and then also finding the time to quilt.

  • Debbie Boaz

I’m new to the quilting part of making quilts so all aspects are somewhat difficult for me. The hardest part is getting my rhythm correct so my stitches are the same length and the tension is right. I quilt on a home machine.

  • My biggest challenge is free motion quilting. I get so nervous I’ll mess it up! I have to learn to relax and practice lots. Your work is amazing and sew creative. Thank you for your inspiration.

  • Gerri Coggins

My biggest challenge is finding the time to finish all the quilts I started.

  • My biggest quilting challenge is time!

  • Biggest challenge is completing projects instead of having several UFO’s. I’m working on challenging myself to do more on quilting then just stiple as well

  • Virgi

Deciding on a quilting motif then how/where to start!

  • Ann Maddox

I keep finding so many patterns and new fabrics, it makes it hard to decide what to make next. It takes me a while to finish a project because I have neck problems, but I love sewing and creating!

  • Meo McIntyre

Quilting the quilt. I love the detailed quilting but can’t do it.

  • Christine

My biggest challenge is clearing my schedule to make TIME for my greatest love which is quilting…after family! But I let myself get distracted by other good causes which I never think will take tooooo much time. The best thing for me is a quilting deadline…but that has some negatives in ultimate creative process which sometimes needs a lot percolating.

  • Karen A

My biggest challenge is deciding what designs to stitch.

  • Tamara Isaacs-Smith

The hardest part is finding the time to work on my quilts, when I find the time, it is choosing to quilt outside my comfort zone of free motion doodles!

  • MaryAnn B

my challenge is a tough quilt pattern and saying to myself that I can do anything I put my mind to.

  • Perri Ann Kaufman

My biggest quilting challenge is finishing one project before I want to start on another one! So much beautiful fabric on the market……

  • Wilma Kinder

    Deciding a quilting motif

  • Nancy Bowers

My biggest challenge so far was the first t-shirt quilt that I made for a niece. She thought I could just do anything when it came to quilting. I got it made and she loved it.

  • Kellie Campbell

The most challenging part of quilting for me is choosing the right colors that go together better

  • Sharon

My biggest challenge is fabric colors and making sure every thing goes together nicely. Once that’s figured out, i’m good to go!!

  • Wilma Kinder

The hardest part for me is planning the quilting.

  • Aftermath Quilting

My challenge is deciding on quilting designs.

  • Jeanie Allen

I love to make quilts and each step is a huge challenge – I have MS and am very limited as to what I can do well – but I won’t let this wheelchair stop me – I keep finding a new way to met each new roadblock

  • Sally

My biggest challenge is sandwiching the quilt… wish there were an easy way to do this. Everything else is fun!

  • Joyce Stratton

My challenge is doing the quilting. This year I have been trying QAYG on some of the larger quilts and I’m learning, slowly, to do free motion quilting. It’s always something I find myself putting off until the last minute as I’m not real good at it.

  • Susan Brewer

My biggest challenge seems to be committing to one project or staying with one project to “getter done!” With limited time I find myself jumping around to different projects and none finished. Gotta stick with it to the finish and not get distracted by more pretty colors and beautiful patterns!

  • sandy haber

biggest challenge is just getting the courage to sit down and start! once the pattern is chosen and fabric picked out, then it takes me a while to actually cut the fabric. i just have to say, okay now do it! last quilt i made, took me almost 3 years to work up the courage to actually cut the fabric — but then it went so quickly and went together so easily, i couldn’t figure out why it took so long!

  • Gwen McGinnis

My biggest quilting challenge is getting my stash quilted before I die! I have plenty to do, let me tell ya! My children want quilts and not quilt tops!

  • Louise King

My biggest challenge is quilting on my 5 foot frame. I don’t have room for a larger frame, but it does take a while to get a large quilt done on it.

  • Bethni Lee

I have never done actual quilting. I always stitch in the ditch. I’m so afraid to mess up a project. I have practiced, but am too scared to actually DO it.

  • Linda Nelson

    Finishing my quilts!

  • Joanne Moore

My most recent big challenge was learning machine applique… I’ve been piecing for nearly 7 years but my expecting daughter in law wanted me to make a Mommy & Me quilt (with applique elephants). I did a lot of research on raw edge and turn edge applique and practiced with a handful of stitches on my new Bernina to get it right.

  • Marlene

My challenge is seeing a quilt I like and picturing it in another color way.

  • Stacey B Trichel

    Set in seams!

  • April J.

Just finding time to quilt is my biggest challenge! Next would be having to pick from among all the lovely fabric color choices…decisions, decisions!

  • Jan B

Making decisions about fabrics to use. That’s why I often either buy kits or use precuts!

  • geri kuster

Choosing fabric is such fun but also the most challenging for me. Usually buy way more than I need so I can change my mind as I go along.
