Good Morning, Quilters!
We are on a blog hop today! For those of you unfamiliar with the term—a blog hop is like a ten-day progressive party. Every day for ten days, we are invited to stop by a new friend’s house (or blog) for some refreshments, a little conversation, a few party games and in this case a GIVEAWAY!
Often a blog hop, like a progressive party, is a way to celebrate something. In this case, we are celebrating Quilt-Artist-Extraordinaire, Deborah Boschert’s new book, Art Quilt Collage.
A REFERENCE BOOK OF TECHNIQUES
I am really excited to share this book with you because it contains so many fresh ideas about quilting. It is a technique book, chock full of inspiration.
Now don’t get excited over the word “Art Quilt”–I know it intimidates many…This book is packed with ideas on how to add interest to any quilt, whether it is a small collage for framing or a king size quilt for your bed.
ART QUILT COLLAGE BOOK CHAT
I had an opportunity to chat with Deborah about her book last week…
After some initial silliness, I threw down a challenge…
Deborah offers a clear path of how to transform an inspiration (like a photo or a word) into a quilt. There are machine quilting and hand embroidery tips, design and composition suggestions,(including a design checklist), and a very interesting chapter on personal symbols.
I was really intrigued by the chapter on Finishing which include several options for edge treatments as well as a variety of ways to mount or hang a quilt. (I’m thinking some of my “Vase Quilts” might become mounted or framed “Art work”!)
SEVERAL CHANCES TO WIN!
Enter to win a copy of Deborah’s book here at The Inbox Jaunt simply by leaving a comment on today’s post. Tell us what your personal symbol might be…
I think mine would be a flower, or a coffee mug, or a sewing needle, or a spool of thread, or a pair of glasses, or a silhouette of my six children, or…..Hmmmm….I think I have an…
Inspiration for an Art Quilt Collage!!!
Happy Stitching,
Lori

Nature symbols – trees, sun, moon, clouds …. you get the idea : )

I love your Craftsy classes. I teach beginning free motion quilting at my local sewing store. It takes a lot of nerve because I consider myself an advanced beginner, not even close to an intermediate quilter. What I want to accomplish with my class is to let everyone know that free motion quilting is so much fun. It doesn’t have to be perfect and the more you practice, the better you’ll be. I am constantly on the lookout for new patterns and techniques to learn. Thank you for your Craftsy classes and your blog. The more education I get, the more I practice, the better I get.

This might just inspire me to try an art quilt!b or at least ipuse arty quilt elements in a quilt. Wouldn’t it be fin to add a little art panel on the back of an otherwise boring quilt back? I don’t really have a personal symbol…yet. I like the idea though, and thinking about what it should be is a good exercise in self awareness!

I see auto correct and fat fingers got the better of my typing this morning! What I was trying to say is it would inspire me to try an art quilt or at least insert an arty quilt panel on a quilt back. This is what I get by trying to type before I have coffee!

Morning Lori & Others,
My personal symbol is The Scottish Thistle–a beautiful but invasive weed. I so enjoyed the video & Lori, you’ve ventured into an artistic world that will love you & learn so much from talent that you’ve so generously shared. YOU GO GIRL!
Like others, I would like to win Deborah’s book; she was animated with it’s debut.

Love seeing art quilts that look like a picture. I also love anything with flowers.
Kathy E.
I would say my symbol is the swirl…a round shape with the line going round and round. I have a pair of earrings with that shape that I bought in Sante Fe and the lady who made them said it was the sign of eternity. I like that!
Karen
My sister marbles fabrics “marbled-arts.com” I try to always use a piece of that fabric in a project. I use that as my symbol. Would enjoy an adventure into collage quilts.
Kathy
Would love to page through this book. Intrigued with the om symbol
Michele
Mine is the “rosebud”. I love gardening, and would like new inspiration on how to apply that to my quilting.
Barb Sutton
For me the giraffe. Warm soft eyes, to comfort Soldiers, family, friends. High above with long neck, to see above the crowd, inquisitive where others may not see. The book looks amazing.
Gail Griffin
Looks like a great book!
My personal symbol would probably be a flower. Flowers, even one, bring beauty wherever they are.
Barbara
I’ve been looking for an art quilting book to purchase and this one looks like a great choice.

First thank you for your wonderful blog. I enjoy it very much. I have never made an Art quilt and would love to learn more!
Donna
My favorite symbol would be a cloud. Clouds fascinate me every day.
Mary C
My personal symbol would be a spool of thread with a sewing needle. My spare time will find me in my quilting studio sewing something. I love to create and share with family and friends.

I’m really looking forward to Deborah’s book. I follow her blog and hope that some day I might even be able to take a class with her. I haven’t decided on a personal symbol but would work with dragonflies, birds, flowers and maybe cats to start.
Kim
Is this where I enter todays giveaway? I just love this book and would love a copy! I would use a silhouette of my two dogs I think.
Patricia Yamada
I, also, am intrigued by Deborah’s new book.
Alice
I’m always looking for ways to make my quilts interesting. This book would help

I have made 2 collage quilts. I have always been one to follow directions precisely when piecing and found that using collage makes the whole process so much more creative, personal, and freeing and the array of fabrics to interpret the subject are endless, making the fabric hunting really fun. I love the idea of fabric collage for a journaling! Subjects would be endless. Palm trees and colorful flowers would be interesting!
Ellen
I love the idea of this book! I have been wanting to figure out how to put a little more of “me” into my quilts. Thanks for the opportunity to win the book.
Cherie Lumsden
Started playing with collage and “art” quilts a couple of years ago and now love it.
The book could well prevent quite a few false starts (and stops(grin)
Personal symbol would have to be a butterfly – have worn one for nearly 40 years now.
Mainly a broach and have a box of “retired”(broken) ones from years gone by.
Sandy
This book looks like it would be great in my collection

Hi Lori, I have just ventured into some free motion collage embroidery which I guess is similar to an art quilt so I would love to win this fabulous new book to give me inspiration and instruction. I have a thing about seed heads and the amazing patterns and silhouettes they create, often in an otherwise bare garden or field so maybe that would be my personal symbol, although also as my name is Lizzy B (first initial of my surname) I have often used a bee in my work so maybe that would be my personal symbol, I’m not quite sure what is meant by the term so I will have to read the book to find out. Thank you for the opportunity to win one.

Always love a chance to win…right now, my symbol is a feather…..I love quilting feathers!
Christenna Stamm
This is tough to come down to one thing but I think a needle pulling thread would do because it could become one of the many symbols you find gathered around me at any given time. You both have my attention…!!!
Mary Lou Steinbauer
Really enjoy the posts. Today was unexpected and very interesting. As a beginner I feel a bit apprehensive but am intrigued by the art quilts.
Michelle
My personal symbol is a ladder-it evokes ascension, Heaven, advancement. I first used it in a quilt I made about the President’s House where George Washington held nine slaves in Philadelphia. I used it in part because George, like my late father, was a Mason, and the ladder features prominantly in freemasonry.
Kimberly Brandt
My symbol would be a seashell as I live by the sea and I am constantly seashell hunting and collecting :0). Thanks for the chance to win this inspirational art quilt book, I love new ideas that make my quilt mine in a special way.
Happy Sewing!
buntyw
Mine is a guinea fowl – I have had a thermofax screen made and use it all the time!!
Anna Thornton
A fire breathing dragon (or so my kids would have you believe?)
Louise Wolf-Novak
Look forward to seeing the book! I’d choose a butterfly as a symbol after watching caterpillars transform into monarchs this September
Sue
My personal symbol would be a cat. Or an alpaca. Or my piano. Or my grandkids.
hmmmmmm……too many choices which help define a small part of me. Can’t decide.
Sue Munn
Love this! I’ve just bought several technique books in this genre and would love to win this one!
Anita Rabinoff-Goldman
i love the layering effects in deborah’s pieces – paint over fabric over paint over fabric. very effective in communicating the complicated layers of life!
Linda Feikema
I use a small paper pieced house block on all my labels. I guess that’s my symbol.
Susan
My personal symbol would be a cross, music notes, a violin or handbell.
Rebecca Wilson
Very interesting concept. Looking forward to exploring it and coming up with something new!
Trena
The Book sounds very intriguing. I think my symbol would be a cat. Mine seem to be very focused on always being underfoot, on my quilts, and sitting in front of my sewing machine.
Ronni G
I so enjoyed the interview and would love to win the book!
Dianne
My personal symbol would be a willow tree.
naomiz5
My personal symbols would have to be a tree, or a leaf. This book looks wonderful. Thanks for introducing it here.
Karen H.
My personal symbol would be my car, 2007 Mustang GT.
Susan
a daisy would be my personal symbol, because they are a friendly flower and I try to be friendly to everyone I meet.
Laura Austin
Ooh, I’d love to have this book. My personal symbol would be a bird for many reasons. As the crow flies – for my impatient side. Fly high above the crowd – for my inquisitive side. And on and on…
Betty C
I enjoyed the video. My personal symbol would be a cat.
Linda Bachinski
I am just a beginner at the Art Quilt thing, but I love stitching and fabric of all kinds. I also love seeing what others have done. This books sounds like a great resource.
Joy
My personal symbol would be a lamb by a rose bush. I’m excited to see the blog list has so many names I don’t recognize. I see a lot of new friends coming up.
susan hilsenbeck
Book sounds wonderful. My personal symbol is a gecko — chubby small cousin of a dragon, which I am the year of. 😉
Judith Kapoun
I’d love to win the book! I think I’ll make my personal symbol a “navigator’s compass”. My oldest son had it tattooed on his chest. He was killed in 2008, in an arson fire. All of his siblings (4), along with cousins and friends, have gotten the tattoo. I’ve made one paper-pieced quilt with it….but I’m fascinated with the symbol every time I see it. Thanks!
Jean Quick
Although I am not “into” art quilting, these examples catch my interest. My favorite symbol is the butterfly – to me, the symbol of change and possibilities and grace.
