Deborah Boschert, Collage

Good Morning, Quilters!

We are on a blog hop today!  For those of you unfamiliar with the term—a blog hop is like a ten-day progressive party. Every day for ten days, we are invited to stop by a new friend’s house (or blog)  for some refreshments, a little conversation, a few party games and in this case a GIVEAWAY!

Often a blog hop, like a progressive party, is a way to celebrate something.  In this case, we are celebrating  Quilt-Artist-Extraordinaire, Deborah Boschert’s  new book, Art Quilt Collage.

A REFERENCE BOOK OF TECHNIQUES

I am really excited to share this book with you because it contains so many fresh ideas about quilting.  It is a technique book, chock full of inspiration.

Now don’t get excited over the word “Art Quilt”–I know it intimidates many…This book is packed with ideas on how to add interest to any quilt, whether it is a small collage for framing or a king size quilt for your bed.

ART QUILT COLLAGE BOOK CHAT

I had an opportunity to chat with Deborah about her book last week…

After some initial silliness, I threw down a challenge…

Deborah offers a clear path of how to transform an inspiration (like a photo or a word)  into a quilt.  There are machine quilting and hand embroidery tips, design and composition suggestions,(including a design checklist), and a very interesting chapter on personal symbols.

Deborah Boschert, Collage

I was really intrigued by the chapter on Finishing which include several options for edge treatments as well as a variety of ways to mount or hang a quilt.  (I’m thinking some of my “Vase Quilts” might become mounted or framed “Art work”!)

Hello everyone. My personal symbol is an angel. I have them throughout the house.

  • Pat Evans

I found the closed captioning to be hysterical (and somewhat distracting) as it kept mistaking thread for other words like Fred! So funny. I will have to watch the video again and focus on your conversation. My personal symbol would be a purple flower, most likely an iris.

  • Since moving from Nebraska to the coast 8 years ago, I love all things nautical. A wave, a whale, a Sea Star. When doing guild challenges I add a nautical touch to each project. AND thanks for the fitness challenge this summer, I’m on my way to a healthier lifestyle. It was the boost I needed to get some momentum! YAY!

Looking forward to seeing the book! I should post a photo (if I can figure out how!) of a collage quilt I made a few years ago that includes several of my personal symbols. If I had to choose one, right now I’d go with a teacup and saucer — which to me represents both slowing down to enjoy the quiet moments in life and sharing some of those moments with friends.

  • Duane Wiley

Infinity Symbol! Art is never ending and thats how I see creative people and their works.

  • Kari Hoyes

Looks like an awesome book! Personal symbol – no single thing, but perhaps a spinning wheel or a book. Blog hops are totally fun and so glad you’re doing it this week.

  • NancyR

My symbol would be a cat or as many others have said, a butterfly which to me stands for transformation

  • My personal symbol is a big A….all the family have names that start with A except the hubbie! 🙂

  • Interesting idea, a personal symbol. Started a great conversation with my DH about it. I’ve admired art quilts but never tackled one, this book may inspire me to finally try. Thanks for the opportunity to win it.

  • Ann Lamy

<3 HEARTS <3 . . . are my favorite symbol. Great video, Lori…and thanks for the opportunity to win the Art Quilt Collage Book!!! ***smiles***

  • skirry

Would love to win the book. I too am particularly interested in the edge finishes she presents.

  • Denise P

Well, I think I might pick a bird, probably the crane, which is full of symbolism in Asian cultures.

  • Melody Lutz

I like to put a musical note in my quilts

  • My symbol would be a hummingbird

  • Regina D.

I’ve always loved daisies! I think that would be my personal symbol, even though I add hearts to the labels that I make. What a wonderful book!

  • Mrs. Plum

My personal symbol would be a leaf. Thanks for the giveaway chance!

  • Marcia Hoekstra

Hmmmm, that is not an easy task. My first choice would be a smile as a smile makes life’s difficulties easier to deal with…..or the goldfinch since it is bright and sunny and makes me smile. 🙂

  • VickyW

Love to win the book. It really looks creative and fun. My symbol would be a seeker.

  • scrappychris

Every day I am inspired by reading your blog. It opens a door to some other avenue, technique or a quilting motif to try. Thank you Lori!!!

  • Karen L.

This looks like it is a beautiful book filled with lots of ideas. My symbol if I actually had one would be a black skimmer or perhaps a dragonfly. Thanks for the give-away!

  • Cathie Scanlon

My personal symbol would be a frog.

  • Sharon

What a fun challenge for the both of you! Can’t wait to see the outcome. I think my personal symbol is a star.

  • Barb Ellis

My personal symbol is a dragonfly and I add one on each quilt I know make. I love Art Quilting and look forward to looking at Deborah’s book. It looks very interesting.

  • I’ve recently become interested in the concept of art quilts, so this is very timely. 🙂 My personal symbol is definitely a bird. I love all things “bird”!

  • Anne from Belgium

I always like to learn new techniques and have never done art quilts.
My personal symbol would be a ginkgo leaf.

  • ginnymayblog

I choose a star as my personal symbol, to represent all we don’t know about our universe.

  • Tammy

The idea of a personal symbol is intriguing. I think I would choose a nine-patch block because I like to keep things simple.

  • Tempel Vi

If I don’t win it I am going to buy it!

  • I think needle and thread would be my symbol. I always feel the need to fix things, material, physical, or emotional. The thread that binds.

  • Debbie Horton

I watched the other blog interviews and Deborah’s book seems to have perfect timing for me right now. A symbol? That would almost be a collage in itself! But it would be a cat, a bluebird or a rudbeckia flower. Thanks!

  • Barbara Hughes

I would love to have this book. Love the idea of art and quilting. thank y ou.

  • Sue Reinhart

My personal symbol would be Mountains! I would love to make a collage Quilt, a next step from landscape quilts that I love to make.

  • Maureen Dobranski

I am so glad to have the opportunity to win this book. It sounds wonderful! Some books on art quilts are just too scary but this one sounds more user friendly and inspiring

  • Geneen Granger

I ‘d love to win Deborah’s book as I took her video course a few years ago and it was great! Would be a jumpstart back into fabric collage.

  • Thanks for participating in Deborah’s video Blog Hop!! I enjoyed hearing about your favorite parts of the book. I’d LOVE to win a copy for my guild’s library (as I have my copy already!!)

  • Sandra L Ellison

My personal symbol would be a chair. I’m interested in all chair forms but the one I’d choose as my symbol is a basic line drawing of a plain wooden dining chair — seat, four legs connected by a rung, with a back composed of two verticals joined by 2 or 3 horizontal pieces.

  • Sandy Mills

My personal symbol would be a Kokopeli. I love southwest designs.

  • My personal symbol would be the star – there are so many to choose from and would be a great adventure to create one. That books sounds very inspirational and would love to win it.

  • Suzanne Steinmetz

Art quilts are fascinating me and I’d like to do one. This book sounds like a great guide. I’d like to work in cacti in a desert scene.

  • Helen

This book sounds like just what I’ve been looking for! Love your blog and am getting inspiration and courage from you!

  • My personal symbol is a dragonfly.

  • Terry Helms

I think a leaf would be my symbol of choice. They are like snowflakes – so many shapes and sizes – and change color and form all the time.

  • Jill Coy

    Lori,

Enjoyed watching the video chat with Deborah. Her book sounds intriguing! My personal symbols would have to include colorful flowers, musical symbols like a staff (using colorful heavy threads), artist’s brushes and palette, colorful yarn and crochet hook or knitting needles, and, of course, a sewing machine!!

Thanks for the opportunity to enter the contest. Looking forward to reading other comments and to seeing the results of your challenge to Deborah.

  • Vickie A

I tend to put a heart somewhere in most of my creations.

  • Carla

Would love this book! I’m ready for a new phase of my quilting. Not sure I have a personal symbol, but often put a certain swirl under my name.

  • My personal symbol is a dog! My peek a Pom!

  • Charlo

Would love this book as I am an Art Quilter. My most used symbol is a butterfly.

  • Kathren Arnette

What a lovely book that seems to offer a wide range of creative exploration! These days my personal symbol seems to be a set of car keys. Yikes! Don’t want to be late getting anyone to school!

  • Ann Shibut

As one who has been quilting for over 50 years I am still learning, and I always prefer technique books to pattern books, so this one is for me! As for a personal symbol…I’ve never thought of that before, but perhaps a pen or pencil, as I also love to write.

  • I can’t wait to see what both of you do with the challenge materials! My personal symbol is probably a heart. I look for them in nature and unusual places (like in peeling paint) and they remind me of how much God loves me, which for some reason is easy for me to forget.
