I use a Babylock Espire for all my FMQ and it does allow for the feed dogs to drop!

  • Brenda

I use my regular machine — a Husqvarna Viking that’s about 12 years old. Can drop the feed dogs when I use a darning foot, and not when I use an even-feed foot. Would be so nice to have something to move the machine instead of the quilt as am getting bad arthritis in my hands and it’s difficult to maintain a good grip on the quilt. I usually do bed-sized quilts.

    Hi Lori
Love your weekly tutorial here in Australia I FMQ on an Elna 7200 feed dogs down and have just purchased a sweet 16 which I find much easier to work on

  • I have a Huskystar 224, and I can drop the feed dogs.

  • Deb Leake

I quilt on my Bernina 580 with feed dogs down. Still a beginner. Keep on doodling, right?

  • karon

Hi, I share ownership in a Gammill Statler stitcher, but my heart really is into using my Janome 8900 for free motion quilting. It allows me to be much more creative in using background fill designs. The feed dogs drop, but I quilt with them up. Thanks for the chance to win.

  • I use a Handi Quilter Sweet 16 for FMQ, no feed dogs. I’ve also used my PFAFF Expression 150 Anniversary Edition with the feed dogs down, and my Bernina B350 with the feed dogs down. I would be interested in a FMQ post/article with feed dogs up.

  • Shirleyann Graff

The Elna Excellence 720 is my machine, and the feed dogs do drop, however lately I’ve been enjoying quilting with the walking foot which allows more control of my stitch length.

  • Vickie Alldrin

I use a HandiQuilter Sixteen for large projects but for small projects I use my Pfaff Expression 5.0 and yes I do lower the feed dogs. Love your blog Lori! Thanks

  • Betty S

I use a Bernina 440 QE and can drop the feed dogs. Love your blog. It is so inspirational.

  • I have a brother 1500. I can drop my feed dogs with ease. I usually drop them when free motion quilting. I love this machine.

  • Anne Lampela

I use a Janome Horizon 8900 and I can lower my feed dogs. Love the machine.

  • Rynetta Coetzee

I use a Bernina 440QE and I drop the feed dogs. I have learnt a lot from your articles!

  • Bernina 930 and yes, I drop the feed dogs.

  • Jeanette

I use a Janome 6600 and I drop the feed dogs. This is off the subject but I tried to get a Husquavarna Free Motion Guide Grip but the woman said that Jo Ann’s doesn’t carry them any more. Hmmm…. It looks so handy! Thanks.

  • Kate Luke

P.S. The feed dogs cannot be lowered on the Viking Mega Quilter.

  • I use a Bernina 830. The feed dogs drop, bells chime and whistles blow! Love it.

  • Hi Lori: Thanks for all the tutorials. I love to use them in my quilting. I learned FMQ on a Janome Memory craft 4900 and loved it so much I now invested in a Janome 7700 Horizon with the deeper throat. Both models have feed dogs that can be lowered, On my Horizon I quilt with the feed dogs up.

  • Karen W.

I use a Janome 6600P that does enable me to drop the feed dogs. Thanks for the chance to win this magazine. I appreciate your blog.

  • Amy Roth

At home I have a Brother NX400. It’s very small and I only do up to a large wallhanging on it. My feed dogs do drop. I’ve also rented time on a Gammill, and when that was no longer available to me, I’ve been lucky that a friend has let me user her Viking longarm. My dream is to have an Innova!

  • I use a Baby Lock with a long arm or a Bernina 930. Both of them drop feed dogs.

  • Kate Luke

I use a Viking Mega Quilter. It comes with a plate that covers the feed dogs. Sometimes I just lower the tension to 0. Both methods work well.

  • Kathy Kittelson

I have just purchased a Babylock Crescendo and I’m looking forward to my first free motion class in 5 days. So I am a beginner. This machine has lots of bells and whistles. The throat is 11.5 inches, the feed dogs drop. I love your ideas and look forward to developing free motion skills. Thanks.

  • I use a Bermina 440 QE. I can drop the fees dogs. And I usually do NOT use the BSR (Bermina Stitch Regulator); I prefer to “drive” it myself.

  • Connie

I use a Husqvarna Viking Designer that allows me to drop the feed dogs.

  • Carol Lazzeri

Hi Lori. I use a Viking Sapphire 930, and, yes, I can drop the feed dogs.

  • Sherry Bingham

I quilt with a Handiquilter Avante. Feed dog lowering is not an option. I used to quilt with my old faithful Singer 401. Those feed dogs could be lowered.

  • Jeanne

I used to quilt on my Janome 1600 (yes, I dropped the feed dogs) but now I use my Handi-Quilter Sweet Sixteen. Same principle, but love the extra throat space!! [Everyone needs a Sweet Sixteen!!!] 🙂

  • After 10 years of FMQ on a Brother 1500 with the feed dogs dropped, I stepped up to a APQS George last year (no feed dogs) — love the longer arm and the customized table which minimize the stress on my neck and shoulders.

  • I have a Husqvarna Megaquilter and a Pfaff 2058 that I use for fmq. It doesn’t matter if the feed dogs are dropped on the Pfaff and sometimes I remember to drop them and sometimes I do not so it must just be the machine settings. There were articles about this going around several years ago. The Megaquilter has a flat piece that fits over the feed dogs for the fmq setting. This machine has some “get up and go”!

    • Marcia

I use my Viking Quilt Designer and drop the feed dogs, no long arm for me. Thanks for sharing all your tutorials.

  • I use a longarm: APQS Millennium–no worries about feed dogs!

  • Carole Valenzuela

Good Morning! I use the Viking Quilt Designer and it does let me drop the feed dogs.

  • I quilt on a Bernina 185 home machine but am considering a sitdown longarm. I do drop my feeddogs.
I have used a couple of your wonderful designs on quilts. I love the pinecones and pine boughs.
    Thanks for sharing.

  • Connie Dodd

Brother CS6000i – I can drop my feed dogs.

  • Charma Harrison

I love free motion more than piecing now and have been using my Elna Excellence 730 with dropped feed dogs. However, I just purchased a Sweet 16, which does not have feed dogs and doesn’t need to be dropped or covered, a few days ago and finished my first project yesterday. What fun! I look forward to each Tuesday and Wednesday so I can practice whatever you have for us. I have learned so much from your tutorials and appreciate that I can just go to my email and have something to work on without having to research things to help me improve.

    • BARBARA

Congratulations on your published article Lori. Yes, I can drop the feed dogs on the Bernina Artista 730; thank you for your examples.

  • I use a Kenmore Elite Ergo 3. It is an embroidery machine so the feed dogs do go down, but only when you have the embroidery hoop in! The machine will not allow you to sew at any other time. The lovely computer knows you don’t have the hoop connected and it tells you to raise your feed dogs : (
I would love to see how you work with the feed dogs up!
Thank you for the give away!!

  • I have a Janome 8900 and, yes, I can drop the feed dogs.

  • Lynda discenza

Good morning Lori, thank you for giving us the opportunity to win a magazine copy of American quilter by just entering our sewing machine brand! My Pfaff 7570 is just great to do free motion quilting and the feed dogs also lower. Love your messages everyday! Thanks
    Lynda

  • Kathy Vanacoro

Innova 22″, Bernina 1640. Janome 9900 and Pfaff 2140…all feed dogs drop and I stink at FMQ in my domestic machines so I LOVE you FMQ articles and I am PPP

  • Heather sanders

I am free motion quilting on my Janome 6600. Yes I can drop the feed dogs.

  • Mary M

I do my FMQ on a Janome Memory Craft 6500 with the feed dogs down — when I remember to drop them! I accidentally quilted a large wall hanging with the feed dogs up. It turned out pretty well, considering! Maybe the FMQ (hopping) foot makes as much difference as dropping the feed dogs?

  • Kathy Vanacoro

Innova 22″ longarm. Piecing on a Bernina, Pfaff or Janome and all can drop feed dogs for FNQ

  • I use my Bernina 530 and yes, I can drop the feed dogs.

  • Kathy

Bernina 550, used with and without stitch regulator. Does let me lower the feed dogs!

  • Barb E

I use a Singer Futura and I can drop my feed dogs but I find that FMQing works better if I go ‘0’ stitches and leave the feed dogs alone. My machine is 4 years old and I have problems with it for sewing but FMQing is great. Keeping my fingers crossed to win the magazine.

  • Diane

I use a Singer 9960 Quantum Stylist. The feed dogs do lower.

  • I have a Bailey Home Quilter which is a midarm, on a Superquiter proflex frame. It has a 15 inch arm. I recently upgraded to a APQS Millennium with a 26 inch arm and love them both. Since they are dedicated quilting machines, neither have feed dogs. Thanks for all the inspiration you provide.

  • Jean Quick

I use a Bernina 440QE – yes, the feeddogs drop. Love your blog! Have learned soooo much from it! Thank you.

  • For years I used a Janome memorycraft 6500 and still do for some projects. The feed dogs can be dropped. But my main quilting machine is the Handiquilter sweet16 sitdown.

  • Nancy N

I use a Bernina 440QE, and yes, I can drop the feed dogs. Enjoy your tutorials.
