Thank you for such a delightful eye-feast! With all the big digital-print panels out there (such as the Dream Big panels that are all the rage for quilting), this would be a fantastic one to have & to quilt! The painting is just so magnificent! And I’m imagining the quilting following the edges & stems.
I’ve always loved Georgia’s bigger-than-life paintings & this seems to be the year I’ve found myself being pulled in the direction of fall colors like never before. My thing has always been pastels or rich, jewel-tones & generally disliked orange tones (because they look awful on me!), but both of my grandsons love colors I’ve avoided (lime & orange), so I’ve had to use those colors in their quilts & when making knit items!! Now I find my eye lingers in the tones of orange that range from deep rust, reds, to shades of greens & browns, yellows & yes, pure orange!
So enjoyed this autumn perspective by O’Keefe! I saw the special exhibition of her work at The Met in December 1988 and bought the exhibit poster of her huge “Red Poppy” (1927; looks more like a bright orange oriental poppy) which I had framed and hung in our guest bedroom. In 1995, that same poppy image was used for her memorial USPS 32-cent postage stamp with the 15-stamp sheet (which I also framed) including this quote from her: “Nobody sees a flower, really – it is so small – we haven’t time, and to see takes time, like to have a friend takes time.”
Have long admired O’Keefe’s work but learned things about her I didn’t know. To stand before one of her paintings is to heaven. Made me weep. New Mexico does have a way of capturing your heart and soul, so it’s easy to understand how she wanted to be there. If if stand quietly and just listen, I imagine I can hear the songs of the Ancients on the breezes. Thank you for the article, Lori.
Just think, this was an incredible creation before digital manipulation was possible!!
What a wonderful visual display.
Thank you Lori for sharing this beauty
