Free Owl Paper Piecing Pattern

November 22, 2021

Via Susan Sider, Quarantine Quilts: Creativity in the Midst of Chaos
Good Morning, Quilters!

Today, I have a real treat for you!

We are continuing our owl theme this week with a FREE Owl Paper Piecing Pattern.

Peggy Aare and Susan Hilsenbeck

First, I must introduce (or reintroduce) you to two readers, Peggy Aare and Susan Hilsenbeck.

Several years ago–back when we were The Inbox Jaunt—the very generous quilt designer,  Peggy Aare of Wisconsin Quilting, offered our readers several free paper piecing patterns.  (Some were based on Silent Sunday and Fine Art photos.)

During quarantine, the talented quilter, Susan Hilsenbeck used the pattern to create her beautiful version of the pattern.  Susan’s Owl quilt was featured in Susan Sider’s book:  Quarantine Quilts: Creativity in the Midst of Chaos.

Be sure to hear Susan Hilsenbeck discuss her quilt HERE

Peggy’s  Updated Pattern

Peggy is again offering her updated Great Horned Owl Pattern —

FREE for readers of LoriKennedyQuilts!

Thank YOU, Peggy!

NOTES AND TIPS FROM PEGGY

Quilters may not need to print all the pages, but just use them as a reference.

Quilters should use the already reversed, full-sized line drawing for the basis of the paper piecing templates.

The shapes are all the same: equilateral triangles that finish at 4″ on a side. Piece them individually and then assemble as you would for a normal patchwork project, in strips or in blocks.

The round eyes need to be appliqued

There are many brown shades.  You can combine colors on the chart to use what you want.  Using shaded ombre brown fabric or tea-dying works well.

(Believe me, you don’t want my help with paper-piecing!)

Congratulations Susan and Thank you, Peggy!!!

Let’s all thank both Susan and Peggy!

Susan, thank you for your inspiration!

Peggy, thank you for your fabulous pattern design!

Thank you; Lori, Peggy and Susan for sharing your creative genius. We grow in our art only because of the generosity of talented creators that go before us.

Thank-you to you and to Peggy. My mother’s favourite bird was the owl, and she had a collection of many different iterations of owls which I inherited. This is one more stunning owl I can now add to the collection. I love the muted browns through to creams, what a wonderful work of art.

  • Thank you, Lori! You’ve helped me so much with free motion quilting and now you’re helping expand our other skills. What a spectacular quilt! Many thanks to Peggy for this fabulous design!

  • Mary Northway

Wow! That is beautiful. How generous to share the pattern. My quarantine accomplishment was learning free motion quilting from you, Lori. I will be forever grateful.
I boast about you to all of my quilting friends. Thank you.

Lori — Thanks for the Shout-Out. It was a challenging, but fun and capability expanding project. Thanks to Peggy for a great design, and Lori for all the tips on quilting I’ve learned over the years.

  • Wow! What an awesome quilt. Thank you for this beautiful pattern.

  • Thank you for all of your inspiration AND generosity…I was one of the rare people whose work increased during COVID and I have been looking forward to “tomorrow” when I can actually sit down and quilt again…your influence will be what gets me there, no doubt! Stay well, everyone! Joan, in Canada, but still an American….
