Easy FMQ for Veteran’s Day

November 11, 2021
Happy Veteran’s Day, Quilters!

In keeping with yesterday’s theme of free motion quilting play, I have a quick and easy technique for you to try.

Try applique stars with an unfinished edge–raw edge applique.

These stars were made by layering scraps of fabric over a piece of canvas and free motion quilting the star.

The star is cut AFTER the shape is free motion quilted.

The typical technique for applique is to create the shape, then applique.

This method allows you to draw the shape with a marker and stitch over the design.

A raw edge remains, but that adds to the charm!

Playing with Fabrics

Raw edge applique works well on a traditional quilt sandwich.

(Be sure to check out the project on page 114 of my book, 25 Days to Better Machine Quilting.

For the stars, I played with canvas as my background and linen for the stars.

Happy Veteran’s Day!

A heartfelt “thank you” to all the veterans out there!

We truly appreciate your service!

  • Life sometimes gets in the way of our crafting for a variety of reasons. I am assuredly not the only one who is happy that you are back. I very much look forward to many more encouraging, pictorial and informative tutorials.

Happy Veterans Day Lori. My father, uncles and brother-in-law all served. I was happy today when I found a company that I could buy products from, that is owned by servicemen. Their profits go to organizations that support veterans.

    Nice to have you back

Good to have you back, Lori!

Happy Veterans Day to you, Lori! I have veterans in my family: father fought in WWII, husband served in Vietnam, and son served in Iraq. I’m happy to say they all came home safely! I am so thankful for all our Veterans who served!

Poor choice of greetings. Remembrance Day is a day for solemn remembrance of all those who gave their lives fighting wars to preserve our freedoms. That’s what we do in Canada

In the U.S. Memorial Day is the same as the Canadian Remembrance Day but now includes remembering all who have died. Veterans Day embraces all who have served our country in the military.
      Let’s all celebrate together.
