  • Just about any comment made between Granny and Mrs Crowley.

never watched DA but the Dowager Countess is such a hoot in the ads. “All this unbridled joy has given me quite an appetite.” Seems to say it all
    Thx
    Megen 🙂

  • Violet to Isobel “Does it ever get cold on the moral high ground?”

Quote on my Facebook page this morning – picture of the Dowager Countess with the caption “I noticed that you just eyballed that. and didn’t measure it. Iadmire quilter’s who live dangerously”

I like a quote from Lady Grantham, the Dowager Countess: ‘Stop whining and find something to do’.

  • “when she gets married her husband will tell her what her opinions are.” THAT was a riot!

  • Violet, when trying to make a phone call, “Is this an instrument of communication or torture?”
I would so love to win this fabric!

  • Violet: First electricity, now telephones. Sometimes I feel as if I were living in an H.G. Wells novel.

  • Vanessa Davies

“That is the thing about nature, there is so much of it” , the Dowager Countess. Thanks for the chance of winning.

  • Margie Jones

She who dies with the most fabrics isn’t sewing fast enough.

  • tracee

“No one ever tells you about raising daughters. You think it’ll be like Little Women, and instead they’re at each others’ throats.”

  • Judy Chastain

Isobel: “How you hate to be wrong.” Violet: “I wouldn’t know. I’m not familiar with the sensation.”

Holy smoke! I can’t remember if I entered yet or not!!!! Love, love. love that fabric. I honestly can’t recall a favorite quote but I really watched the show because I love period movies and shows and love to see the fashion.

  • Sharon

So many, but Violet always has a zinger! “I’m a woman Mary. I can be as contrary as I choose.” Loving dogs, I can also relate to Robert “There is nothing more ill-bred than trying to steel the affection’s of one’s dog.” Was fun looking up quotes. Too many good ones to remember them all! Thanks for sharing your fabrics. They look wonderful. Good-bye to Downton Abbey. Such a wonderful series that will be missed by millions.

  • Barbara Daniel

My dear. A lack of compassion can be as vulgar as an excess of tears

  • Mary Olson

Anything Lady Crawley says, love her!!! Thanks for the giveaway offer.

  • Susan

“If you judge people, you have no time to love them.” Mother Teresa
I haven’t been able to watch the show, but this is one of my favorite reminders.

“First electricity, now telephones, sometimes I feel like I’m living in an H.G.Wells novel”

  • Jo Olinger

So I took you up on the offer to Google a quote. I found a quote from Downtown Abbey and then tried to see if I could find a close quilting quote.

Downtown Abbey Quote: “I was right about my maid. She’s leaving – to get married! How could she be so selfish?”

Quilt Quote: “My husband said if I were to buy any more fabric, he would leave me. I‟m going to miss him!”

I also found a very inspiring quote. Thanks for the opportunity. I had fun searching and reading the various quotes.

  • Karen Halliburton

What a wonderful life we’re going to have. Thank you for the chance to win!

  • Barb Hauck

Love, love, love the entire series and all the characters, even Barrett! But, the Dowager Countess Violet had the best lines:

Mrs. Crawley: “I take that as a compliment.”
Countess Violet: “I must’ve said it wrong.”

Thanks so much for the give away. If I win the fabric, it’ll be put to very good use, trust me!

  • Brittany

Lady Sybil Crawley: I don’t know why we bother with corsets. Men don’t wear them, and they look perfectly normal in their clothes.

  • loosecannon2

Thank you ever so much Lori for a chance to win D.A. Fabric.

Of course I loved that Mary was always referring to The Dowager (Maggie Smith) as GRANNY. Did I miss something or was Mary the only one who referred to Maggie as GRANNIE? Loved the entire series, especially the clothes & hats. Will so miss the show–now what to look forward to on Sunday evenings?

  • Sharmond

I was kind of late to Downtown Abbey, but how I loved it. The finale was wonderful. I am not very good at holding on to quotes, but I saw one recently that is a good lesson learned for me. “While we are postponing, life speeds by”. Thanks for the wonderful giveaway opportunity.

  • Mary O.

“Bananas!” Spratt? Really? I laughed so hard. I did not see that coming at all. That episode was just one of the best ones, so much great stuff happened.
There are so many wonderful quotes. Thanks for sharing with your giveaway. Love your blog.

  • “Every mountain is ‘unclimbable’ until someone climbs it.- Lord Grantham

  • Linda J Wilson

Granny: “Stop whining. Find something to do.”

  • Jaclyn Reynolds

“I love you, Mr. Bates! And I know it’s not ladylike to say so, but I’m not a lady and I don’t pretend to be.”

  • Meghan Redder

Violet to Mary when Mary cut her hair short “Oh, it is you. I thought it was a man wearing your clothes!”

  • Sri Poedjastoeti

Vulgarity is no substitute for wit

  • When you talk like that I am attempted to call Nanny and have you sent ti bed without dinner.

Dowager Countess (Maggie Smith): “At my age, one must ration one’s excitement.”

  • Cindy

“With any luck they will be happy enough. Which is the English version of a happy ending.” Violet in discussing Edith and Bertie

  • “Vulgarity is no substitute for wit.”

  • Beth Barrow

“You know me…Never complain, never explain.” (Violet)

  • Lynne Stucke.

Oh, no! I thought I had an original comment, but I see someone else loved it too. When asked why the English were the way they were. The dowager replied, ‘opinions vary. Some say our history, but I blame the weather.’ Having lived in the UK for 14 years, my husband and I nearly rolled off our chairs laughing! lynnstck@yahoo.com

Isobel: How you hate to be wrong.
Countess Violet: I wouldn’t know, I’m not familiar with the sensation.

  • Carol in Arkansas

I missed so much of the show as I hadn’t seen the first seasons so never watched. But I’ve purchased the series and once unpacked from our recent move from Forest Lake Mn to Arkansas I plan to remedy that and also begin to learn fmq. I’ve done one small wall hanging and did fm on that. Really enjoyed it. Would love to have the fabric to start building a stash to play with. Thanks for the chance.
Reading through posts this is my favorite:
The business of life is the acquisition of memories.

  • RobynO

I’m a woman, I can be as contrary as I choose. My favorite block is contrary wife, so that quote speaks to me

  • I like this one: Violet: “I’m not a romantic, but even I concede that the heart does not exist solely for the purpose to pump blood.” (Season 2) Thanks and God bless! ILuvTheEucharist (at) aol.com

  • I have been catching up on the series on the boxed set since I was behind the times when it started but I love the cook Mrs Patmore and her comment to Daisy the kitchen maid

“Daisy, what’s happened to you? I said you could go for a drink of water, not a trip up the Nile.”

It sounds so like the thousands of times I sent children to the bathroom when I was teaching elementary!

  • Barbara

When asked, “What do you think makes the English the way we are?” The Dowager Countess replied, “Opinions differ; some say our history, but I blame the weather.”

  • Marta, south Georgia

I am so glad I am living during the era that this show was made and shown. Love all the quotes mentioned here !!! Branson said a line that precipitated tears, as he joined the folks at the wedding reception. He was asked why he was back from America and he replied something on the order of : ” This is my family.” I also cried when Edith told Mary that after all would be said and done the two of them would share the same special memories of their family.(paraphrased). Thank you Lori for the giveaway. How typical of your graciousness to your fans.

  • charmingbubble2

Are you here to help or irritate? One I drag out when my husband is putting his two cents worth in….

  • Sharon

Thanks Lori for all you share with us. I am in process of watching your ‘Divide & Conquer’ class and really learning lots from it.

My favourite quote is “No guest should be admitted without the date of their departure settled.”

  • Jennifer

“Sometimes it’s good to rule by fear.” Violet Crawley, Dowager Countess of Grantham. Or the other one that cracks me up – “Vulgarity is no substitute for wit.”
