Doodle in Color!

March 26, 2020
Good Morning, Quilters and Doodlers!

Today we are going to doodle in color in our ongoing series, Better Quilting Through Doodling!

First–a really fabulous announcement!  Bluprint is offering their entire class library FREE for two weeks!  This is a great opportunity to dabble in things you’ve never tried before or take a deep dive into a single topic!  There is something for the whole family…just take your time to explore.

Be sure to take a look at my three classes:

Doodle in Color

If you’re a quilter, you LOVE color. So let’s add a little color to our doodles!  Instead of black pens on white paper try doodling with a colored pen, pencil or marker.

Return to the previous doodling tutorials for inspiration:

Watercolors

Another way to add color to your doodles is with water color pencils or watercolor paint.

I doodled my all time favorite motif, Flower Power with Inktense Pencils.

I also have a very nice set of Caran D’ache Museum Aquarelle watercolor pencils that I love!)

It’s really fun to draw with pencils then brush over with water to reveal the magic!

After the water dried, I doodled over the flowers with a permanent ink pen like Uniball Vision.

Double doodle!  First doodle with colored pencils, then doodle with black ink.

More Flowers

After doodling Flower Power, I tried my luck with Nora’s Rose.

A New Tutorial?

I don’t have a tutorial for this messy flower…Coming soon!?

Doodle A Day

Be sure to doodle every day–and when you can stitch your doodles!

Stay busy and stay well!

Your adventurous doodler,

Lori

  • These doodles would become lovely fabric!

How fun and interesting your colored doodles are, Lori — just what we need at this time. Thank you so much! 🙂
Right now I’m busy stitching masks for local health care providers, but will definitely be giving my doodles some refreshing color once we’ve reached our goal. Take care and be safe and healthy.

Lori, These doodles are just gorgeous! I love them all, but the “messy” flower bouquet is very intriguing & hope you can come up with a tutorial for it. It looks like zinnias to me & I just love them. My mother always planted them in the summer & made bouquets to have around the house. She still loves them, just not able to grow them anymore. I try to take her some when I can. On another note I saw a demonstration of intense ink pencils by a vendor at a quilt show last summer & was very intrigued by them. They were using them on fabric. I saw some embroidered quilts that had been colored in with the intense ink pencils. It looks like fun & something I really want to try! I enjoy all your posts! ❤️

Blessings to all in the online quilt community whose blogs provide us with a relief from our fears. I live just outside NYC, and the situation here is beyond anything you can imagine. We’ve been self isolating for two weeks. I don’t know how I’d survive without quilting. Currently making face masks to donate to area healthcare providers. Hope all crafters can do that too.

Turning doodles into artwork that can be framed! Love this idea <3

    Hi Lori!
I hope everyone is well by you! I love your work and I have both of your books. Can you share what type of notebook you use to doodle with watercolor?

  • Cathy

    Lori,

you inspire all of us to take time out from worry and stress, and just create.

I love your books, btw. I own 3!

    thank you so much.
