Doodle Lessons, Lori KennedyGood Morning, Doodlers and Quilters!

Are YOU ready for some early morning doodle exercises?

Morning is a good time for doodling. It is a quiet activity that helps your brain transition from dreaming to wakefulness.   Perhaps you would even consider getting up 15 minutes early to doodle?! (Like most personal trainers, I ask a lot!)

Pour yourself a cup of tea and join me for a few simple doodle exercises.

(NOTE-This post is a modified version of a post from October, 2015. All links are updated!)

DOODLE WARM UPS

Begin by drawing several small squares.

Use a light pencil to divide the square into quadrants. (The lines are barely noticeable in the photos below-sorry!)

Choose a simple shape like a circle and add it to all four quadrants.Doodle Lessons, Lori Kennedy

DOODLE STRETCHES

Next, add another shape–like two lines–to all four quadrants.

Then add scallops to build on the design.Doodle Lessons, Lori Kennedy

DOODLE AEROBICS

Keep adding simple shapes. Then repeat the original shapes to create a page full of different designs.

Now you’ve got it!

Turn the page and try another grouping of simple shapes.

When you’ve completed twenty minutes of doodling, take a break.

Get a sip of water and towel off.   Then sit back and review your work.  Is there a design that would work in your next quilt?

Put a star by your favorites…so you can find it when you sit down to stitch.

Or  better  yet, stitch  it  right  now!

Look how fast YOU just designed two dozen quilt blocks!!

Now that’s a routine I would consider doing before breakfast!

  • Thank you for this great idea. I started my doodle notebook yesterday. Love it!

Hi Lori…last week I had to quilt the border on a T-shirt quilt. The man it is for is Irish, so I decided on shamrocks from your book. I doodled the shamrocks quite a bit, and then practiced stitching them. They came out great!! My husband was very impressed that I stitched them without marking them! Thank you so much for your directions and encouragement in our quilting endeavors!

I just bought a notebook the other day to start doodling. But a morning person, I am not! It takes at least two cups of coffee before my eyes clear. ; – } But once I get going, I’m good! I’ve never thought of creating blocks for my doodling – what a neat idea that is! I’ve always been a “scribble it anywhere doodler”. I’m going to try your method.

P.S. I definitely rather face you in the morning!! Jillian Michaels is scary1

Ha, Ha, – You’re definitely not as intimidating as Jillian Michaels, but I need her workout too.

I’ve not doodled for a spell, so I’ll use your inspiration to get going on it again. Thank you Lori! I appreciate all the help you give me. 🙂

  • Super, Lori & I can see the lines perfectly. Wondering if you got around to trying the new Bernina #73 adjustable strippling foot & if so, how do you like it?

This is great Lori! You just made my morning. Especially with your pictures at the end! Have a great day!

What a great idea! I have a Zentangle workbook I’ve never used that I can now turn into a quilting doodle book!!

  • Judy Chastain

What a great idea to build doodling into your day. I haven’t done that, and I very seldom doodle. I’m definitely going to give it a try. Thanks, Lori
