Daisy Quilt, Free Motion Quilting

Daisy Quilt, Free Motion QuiltingDaisy, Daisy, Give me your answer, Do!

I’m half crazy all for the Love of YOU!

Good Morning, Quilters!

As you already know, I get song lyrics, little ditties,  stuck in my head all of the time and sometimes they become quilts…(Let’s Go Fly a Kite, Let’s Twist Again, and many more.)Daisy Quilt, Free Motion QuiltingMost of the time, I’m not sure what the origin of the song is…

Is Daisy a 40’s era song?  Is it from a movie or play?  Daisy Quilt, Free Motion QuiltingI stitched this little quilt using several threads:  Superior’s Magnifico for the white outlines, and Sulky Rayon for the yellow and pink backgrounds.Daisy Quilt, Free Motion QuiltingNotice-my substitute for stippling–little leaves and Pebbles!

Daisy Quilt, Free Motion QuiltingWhat about YOU, have you ever turned a song into a quilt?

Of course, some songs…well, they just don’t translate to fabric….

Your Singing Seamstress,

Lori

…”It won’t be a stylish marriage, I can’t afford a carriage, but YOU’ll look sweet upon the seat of a bicycle built for two!”

PS…Stitched on my shiny new BERNINA 770 QE–with lots of bells and whistles (but not the embroidery package for me–not Yet at least….)

I am really enjoying your tutorials as I am not that good at free motion quilting but you have given me ideas on how to approach things. I have used the embroidery module on my Bernina 830 to quilt and this works well on some quilts.

Daisy in the song is thought to refer to Frances Evelyn “Daisy” Greville, Countess of Warwick (10 December 1861 – 26 July 1938) a British socialite and long-time mistress to Albert Edward, Prince of Wales, who later became King Edward VII.

Wow! What a fun quilt! very inspiring!

  • Reminds me of when I made a quilt with Shoo Fly blocks. Couldn’t stop humming “Shoo fly pie and apple pan dowdy…..” I was tempted to machine quilt the lyrics in the border.

Now you have me singing that tune! I love the idea of quilting the lyrics. Even if no one “gets it” but You!

From Wikipedia: Daisy Bell (Bicycle Built for Two)” is a popular song, written in 1892 by Harry Dacre, with the well-known chorus “Daisy, Daisy / Give me your answer, do. / I’m half crazy / all for the love of you”, ending with the words “a bicycle built for two”.

It is the earliest song sung using computer speech synthesis, as later referenced in the film 2001: A Space Odyssey.

    Love your quilt design.

Hi Lori, I really enjoy your blog. I think Daisy, Daisy is a song from the turn of the century. My Dad used to sing it when I was a child and he was born in 1897. Your work inspires me to keep practicing. Thanks for sharing your lovely patterns. Betty L.

Such a fun post. Thanks for the grins everyone!

  • You have so many vehicles, I would love a bicycle! I’ve tried to doodle it, but get lost in the direction!

  • Phyllis

The designs are great and now I can’t get that song off my mind. My Mother sang it a lot and therefore I did too and now I’m singing it like crazy!!

Wow Lori, You have wonderful penmanship with your sewing machine! A lot better than quite a few people with pens and pencils!

  • I love the quilting of the text-both cursive and manuscript in one go! And about the song-a family story often told is that my great grandmother was the first to sing this song on a stage in a vaudeville act. Can’t prove it, and I’d have to ask my dad for more info such as where and when, but I have heard the story so often I have to believe it!

Tammy that is so cool! We want more info about your grandmother!

I learned this verse when I was a little girl…”you’re half crazy if you think that will do. There won’t be any marriage, if you can’t afford a carriage. But you’ll look sweet, upon the seat of a bicycle built for two.”
    Music inspires my quilting everyday.

Now if only I could quilt a bicycle built for two!?

Very funny. I didn’t know that verse!

  • Marie

Enjoying your creativity! You inspire me every time I look at your blogs. Thanks for sharing!

I’m pretty sure Daisy dates back to late 1800’s/early 1900’s. We also had another verse when I was a kid: Michael, Michael, this is my answer true. You’re half crazy if you think that will do! If you can’t afford a carriage, there won’t be any marriage. For I’ll be switched if I’ll be hitched on a bicycle built for two!

  • Karyl McClellan

How large is this? What fun! I love it!

  • Paula

What a great quilt! I love how each petal is filed with a different design! Glad you’re liking your new machine!!!

  • Carol Mallozzi

    What a great practice idea
    Thank you!

  • Claudia

Love all those tunes and your sewing the words is wonderful, I have to try that. The daisy and all the different designs is a great idea and looks so good. Will try that. Thanks again for the great ideas and “In the good old summer time, In the good old summer time…… Claudia

  • We used to have a bicycle built for two and would ride all over the LSU Campus. We had no money when Frank was in school and I gave up my scholarship to put food on the table. 43 years later we still ride but we sold the bike in one of our moves when he was in the Air Force
    !

  • I am always interested in your approach to quiliting a design – the leaves of the daisy are so interesting because each one is unique. One day, if you feel like tackling the challenge, I would love to hear how you design/approach the quilting choices for a pieced quilt.

  • I love this sweet quilt! I’ve had a thing for daisies since my daughter was a GS Daisy 15 years ago. I had to google the song, written in 1892!
