Oh dear, a hole in his pocket. He does need a seamstress! For some reason, (all the books behind him and a candle burned low?) I bet he is a professor.. Bet he is very interesting.

a common predicament in the days of olden…. carrying coins and other things in pockets. I would imagine for professional scavengers there would be a lot of treasures to be found…. in those days of olden. I like this painting. Men….. and their stuff
