Celebrating Five Years of Blogging with a New Banner!!!

The Inbox Jaunt, Machine Quilting, Lori KennedyGood Morning, Quilters!

When a UFO lingers too long…giving yourself a deadline (and telling 10,000 people about it) really helps!

I stitched the letters for this quilt top more than two years ago…

Then I added a border six months ago…

Then I started quilting it last week…

And thanks to YOU it is finished!

Next time someone asks “How long does it take you to make a quilt like that?”

We all know the answer—too long!

A FEW DESIGN NOTES

I added the pebble frame to soften the hard lines of the center square.  Next, I added the flowers in the corners, but then I was unsure how to proceed….

I knew I wanted the corner flowers to stand as a mini-focal point and I wanted to accentuate the shape of the curvy frame.

To make the corner flowers stand out, I used design contrast.

First, thread contrast-the leaves that are adjacent to the flowers are in a solid color green that blends with the background fabric–they create more texture than design.

Second, density contrast-the leaves are more closely spaced, denser, than the open flowers in the corners.

The Inbox Jaunt, Machine Quilting, Lori KennedyI also wanted to accentuate the shape of the frame.

To do this, I could have left it completely open–that would have allowed it to pop, but I think it would have looked “naked” or unfinished.

I chose to use narrow, straight line stitching that contrasted with the flowers that surrounded it.

I used BERNINA’s Ruler Foot!

It took forever! I am sooooo slow at Ruler Work!  (I am gradually learning –more on that soon!)

I had stitched in the ditch around the lettering, but it seemed to need a bit more.

Repeating the String of Pearls from the frame and Varying it was the perfect touch!

Once that was complete, the light green sashing needed something–and I have loved Rick-Rack since childhood…

The Inbox Jaunt, Machine Quilting, Lori KennedyAll in all, I am rather pleased with The Inbox Jaunt!

  • How nice to think of celebrating a milestone in such a perfect way.

  • Susan

Congratulations on 5 years of blogging. I enjoy your tutorials. You did an amazing job on your banner quilt.

  • I don’t mind having dozens of UFO’s I seem to run from one thing onto the next shiny thing that grabs my attention….but I do get plenty of quilts finished and delivered. At my age I don’t pressure myself anymore a deadline….I just enjoy the process and the peaceful mindset from sewing and quilting. Happy Sewing ( it’s my motto)
Congratulations on your anniversary and another beautiful creation, I enjoy all your tutorials and classes from Craftsy.

I first saw this finished banner posted on Facebook and must tell you — the double straight lines inside the curvey string of pearls reminds me of the old iron bed frame headboards like at my grandpa’s house. I wasn’t fond of leaving that space plain and your choice is genius … as always. Happy Anniversary.

Congrats on 5 years! I have been reading the inbox jaunt for almost that long, and I just wanted to say a huge Thank You! You have been so generous with your designs and your encouragement, and I truly appreciate that!!! Your new banner is just fabulous! All thumbs up! And now I must get working on all my UFOs. Thanks for the gentle push. 😉

  • Brenda

Great job on the banner, and another UFO finished as a bonus!

  • Cathy Wilson

What a beautiful quilt. Love your blog so much. Your step by step process of breaking down the quilt design have helped me progress in my quilting. Thank you and “happy Anniversary “.

  • I love the quilting! A finished project is good no matter how long it takes.

  • Marvelous quilting, you have such talent for design in thread. Congratulations on 5 years!

  • Quilting Tangent

    Congratulations on 5 years.

  • Cheri

Congratulations on five years Lori, wish I had been following that long, but am glad I found you thru a lovely non-Quilter!
Yes, I do need deadlines to help me finish, however I have 6 quilt tops to quilt and have “started” 7 others. I have problems with focus????

  • Janet Licari

I have lots of UFO’s but it would be hard for me to place a deadline on them. Missing the deadline would just make me feel worse about still not getting done. I have to craft when everything else is mostly done…it can be days or even more than a week or two to get sewing.
    Great banner! Happy Anniversary 😀

  • Leslie Goldsberry

  • Betty M

Lori, I too am slowly learning how to do ruler work. I seem to press too hard on the ruler thus have problems moving the fabric. I would love to hear your comments.

  • Mary Wolfersberger

Beautiful! I love reading your blog because you provide clear, step-by-step explanations of how to create your designs and also share your decision-making when selecting designs. I continue to learn so much from you…a heartfelt thank you.

  • kaholly

Ummm, yup! Started a 25th anniversary quilt for my sister and BIL 10 years ago. Love your new banner! Very inspiring! Congrats on your blogaversary.

  • Kimie

Yes! I pieced a top for my daughter over 7 years ago and it’s still not quilted. It definitely needs a deadline.

  • wants to learn

Your banner is BEAUTIFUL. You mentioned ruler quilting–I am so confused on the whole concept of ruler quilting. If you could give any info on the whole idea, the process, I would really appreciate it.

Love your blog. I look forward to it in my mailbox. Thank you for all you do for us.

  • Marta

What was your rush, Lori ? I’m only 75 and I look forward to many more lessons from your experiences I look back at what I did 5 years ago and cringe.. Your talent just matures and creates more longevity to your work. I really love this dark green frame quilting. Is this banner going to be hung? in middle of town? at the Fair? by your mailbox? in your dining room? OK, in your sewing room? Wish I could run my hands over it… clean ones of course ! What is the project to ponder and mull over now? I bet
your sewing room is such a Secret Garden of quilties…Look forward to whatever you
serve us next, God has truly blessed you with great talent and a wonderful Mom, I just know.

  • QuiltE

  • 5 Years, Wooo- hooo! Thank you for your commitment!
My bragging rights include, I have quilt tops that aren’t yet quilted and are older than 5 years…. .. So I have many opportunities to use your quilting ideas and expertise and plan to do so. Thank you again.

  • Kim from Calgary

Love the quilting you did on this banner, and congrats on 5 years! I will look forward to hearing more about using rulers, as I bought the foot and rulers for my Bernina 440 and have yet to try them!

  • Lori Hope

It’s gorgeous! And congratulations on your 5-year anniversary! 🙂

  • Crazy Granny

Absolutely gorgeous! I really like the juxtaposition of straight lines against the floral/leaf pattern.

  • Pamela North

Your reward is a beautiful new banner. Our reward is lots of great information and inspiration. Thank you Lori.

  • Judy Chastain

It was worth the wait, Lori! It’s beautiful fmq!

  • Beautiful

  • Rosemaryflower

I love this new banner. I loved the old banner too, but this one has a better story, one of struggle, and victory.
It is always good to tell people things you need to really accomplish, so that they ask you incessantly “where is that project? Where did you hide it?” you cannot do that any more…. and now you didn’t!????????
It is a good way to set yourself on fire to a grand finish.
I am so glad I found your blog, Lori. You help us all get really brave about doing this quilting stuff, I have grown.

  • Kathy h

Congratulations on 5 years! Beautiful quilt. I always enjoy and admire your quilting.

  • Carla Cavaliere

5 years! Congratulations! Lucky us to have you!

  • Amy N.

    It is beautiful!!!

  • Michele R

LOVE IT! The double straight lines inside the frame were perfect. I would never have thought of it. I learned several things: changing the color of the thread and making the leaves denser made the corner quilting standout, and adding circles in the inner sashing (used elsewhere) created continuity. Thank you for your blog! You’re a fantastic teacher!

  • Patti

Great new banner and love the quilt. So proud to call you friend!

  • Carolyn

The quilting is amazing, I love the mix of designs. I just invested in a Bernina ruler foot and I think I’m going to love it. I am new to machine quilting and it helps keep me on track.

  • Deb Peterson

Lovely! Nearly all my projects should have deadlines. Those that do like weddings, birthdays, Christmas, etc,get done and take priority over others.

  • Chip Styles

    Love it

  • Liz Horgan

Lori–it is beautiful and I love how you quilted it. I have a question-did you freehand the “brackets” around the center piece or did you mark them before you quilted? They look so even. I love the lines on them-I agree that it looked naked before and now looks perfect!
I used one of your spiral designs from a post earlier this week or last on a baby quilt I’m finishing up!

  • You completed this just as a envisioned. It is perfect! Can’t wait to hear about your ruler work.
