Happy Friday, Quilters!

I’m off on a road trip to Chicago this weekend–a round up of family….

Just thought I’d show a sneak preview of a quilt I recently finished–more details next week.

In the mean time, I’m counting on YOU to help answer Open Line Friday questions!

EVERYONE ASKS, EVERYONE ANSWERS!

I will kick it off by answering a few questions…

The Quilt-a-Long–To rip or not to rip….

Several people have written about stitching in the wrong rowto rip or not to rip...

That is the question–almost as eternal as Shakespeare….

NOT TO RIP—almost always MY answer!!

If you stitched in the wrong row it will be just fine!!!  Do not rip it out–unless it is in Row 8–the big row.

Which Craftsy Class First?

Several people have inquired about which of my Craftsy classes to watch first…

Both classes contain a lot of information and motifs and I made every effort to not repeat the information.

Both classes demonstrate doodling and quilting each motif (nearly 50 motifs in each class!)

And both classes end each lesson with a Trunk Show.

In Divide and Conquer, I discuss thread and set up more and I discuss six ways to divide a block or quilt for easier quilting.

Craftsy Title Card

In Doodle to Design, we look at a big quilt and there is an emphasis on doodling and lots of motifs!

If that doesn’t give you enough….

I think Christina Cameli’s classes and style are similar:

Her new class: Wild Quilting is about combining motifs effectively– and her other class, Free Motion Quilting Essentials has many great motifs!

CARS?

We’ve already stitched Race Cars and Henry’s Trucks…is there any interest in a Car tutorial like the one seen atop?

What are YOUR questions?   Any Craftsy class recommendations?

Anything else?

We’d LOVE to hear!

Hope your weekend is filled with family and fun!

Lori

  • I liked CINDY NEEDHAM’s CRAFTSY class … more traditional FM quilting but had great explanations of techniques. I like her linen work and other techniques helpful to the newbie.

Sally, it’s going to be spectacular !! I’d treat all the gray sashing with the same design, all the large pink floral the same (with the flower emphasized and echoed), and the rest of same prints each done with identical quilting design. Color of thread? I’m not sure. You could skip around a little and change colors to match–it helps learn tying on and off ! ! !

  • I am about to quilt a piece that is tiled with large vintage prints (photo here: https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-R0RIja20UhU/Vu_pW7MrciI/AAAAAAAAL14/zPOqwL9nwkwmc6DGpp9JjtIODKcMTPB8Q/s1600/UnevenBorders.JPG). I had been thinking of doing different FMQ designs in each block, but I don’t want to take away from the prints (although some are really faint – you can’t really see the print). Or do I just do a large all-over design and not try to keep in the lines. Type A in me says don’t sew over the grey, but maybe I want to try something all over. Just looking for an idea that inspires me. Thanks so much.

Hi all ! Does anyone have a good method for pin basting queen-size quilts without crawling on the floor or requiring more than one large table???

    • Here’s a link to a good explanation of Sharon Schamber’s “board basting” method, including a link to Sharon’s YouTube video: http://www.right-sides-together.com/rst-guide-board-basting/. My friend Ellen swears by this method because she can baste a large quilt while seated at her dining room table. Good luck!

Harriet Hargrave has a method where she makes the quilt sandwich and centers it on a table. She then clamps it down. You can use binder clamps or picnic tablecloth clamps. She pins that area, then moves the sandwich to one of the sides, clamps and pin bastes and then moves to the final third of the sandwich. I hope this helps.

Thank you! I have the binder clips and a good size table, so this should work. I have recently moved where I no longer have access to several tables to baste upon. There are quite a few quilts waiting to be quilted! Thanks, Lori for this open line Friday!

  • Also, I have all the Crafty Classes mentioned by Lori, they are wonderful, very helpful. However they never turn the project over and let us see the back side. Would love to know if they ever have problems getting the stitches to look great front and back.

  • I have been following along with the quilt a long, I see I have plendy of practice to do, but I would not rip out this project, it is not something that I will think of as anything except a practice piece.
Question to group, I have a Bernina 770QE with a BSR. Does anyone have problems with the tension or have favorite setting for the settings. I am new to quilting and this machine, I would appreciate any advise from my Peeps.

    • Rebecca Shaffer

I have a Bernina 750 QE and I have gotten better results when I am doing free-motion quilting by lowering the tension to about 3.5. I usually use BSR 1. Each machine is different, so I would suggest playing around with it a little.

  • Dodie

Cars, trucks, and jeeps, please! Anything for boys. How about jungle animals?

    • Rebecca

Yes, or more woodland animals like the owl tutorial…squirrels? Chipmunks? Raccoons?

  • Carol Fleming

Yes, to cars and trucks. I enjoy both of your classes. Keep up the good work!!!

  • I’d love some ideas for narrow borders and for quilting two borders at the same time.

    • WordPress.com Support

Any of the motifs from our current sampler would work in a narrow border.

  • The nautical tutorial was just what I needed to get moving with free motion. It is so doable. Thank you. Would love to see more of these 8 week projects – they are helping me to practice and be motivated to do different designs!

  • Barbara Stewart

Here’s another “yes” to cars and trucks. So glad I discovered you as I just bought a Bernina 770qe. Now to play with it, yippe!

    • WordPress.com Support

So exciting!!! I love love love my 770QE!

  • Julie

Would love a tutorial on the cars above!

  • Craftsy have so many wonderful classes and this is where I have learned to quilt – both of your classes are excellent and I am enjoying doodling much more than I thought I would. Christina’s wild quilting class is outstanding, as is her other class, and Wendy Butler Berns was great when I was a beginner. Amy Johnson’s class on quilting with rulers has some great ideas too. Thanks again for your time and dedication to helping us all improve our quilting – enjoy your road trip.

  • I also confess to quilting in the wrong row. I will definitely not rip out or start over again. It’s still going to be a wonderful sampler ~thanks Lori:)

  • I had to chuckle when I read that people had questions about quilting in the wrong row. I was sure that I was the only one who did that! Your instructions were so detailed, so how could I do that? I don’t know, but I did! I decided I could work around it.

I would be interested in a tutorial on cars and trucks like the one shown on this post.
