When I first looked at the painting I only saw the three girls in the foreground. On the second look I found the other 2 hiding in the bushes in the background. They lent a mystery to this painting.
Um, what a good subject the painter chose. And, how perfectly this painting tells its story. It is bound to tug at the heart strings with the women (or big girls) caring for the beautiful little wild creatures, both winged and human. Also poignant that the little orphan feeds the birds while learning to sew. The bread, birds, bench, gardens, cluster of young women, are equally perfect. Yum!
